hi Everyone,

First time I shot SQUEEZE mode in the HVX 200 and I encountered a problem. Has anyone noticed that when you slow mo a clip that was shot in 24p or 30p SQUEEZE mode, the top part of the video seems to fluctuate and moves. I exported it to dvd and noticed it shows on a TV too! You guys know anything about this and how to fix this problem?

Have not seen this happen my self can you give more details. What were your cam and recording settings? Which NLE are you using? and what does top part of the VIDEO seems to fluctuate and move mean? Does this happen to all the clips you shoot for their entire duration? If your slow moing the clips, for the time being try shooting PN formats to get good slow mos until you solve the problem.

it some time happens to me like;vibrating the upper line of the picture. But it only happend when i record dv to dv cassette.I usually saw when i am capturing, but it is out of safe area.At least premiere doesnt show on the ex monitor or on the exported videos...

I was shooting in SD 24p/30p SQEEZE mode (True 16x9). The top edge of the video vibrates, it goes up and down, when I slow mo the clip. TRY SHOOTING SQUEEZE in my settings and slow mo it. Is it in the pull down settings of my editing software? I use FCP studio 6.

YUP! the top part of the picture moves like its feathering the edges or something. I don't know how this happens. I shot it in SQUEEZE mode 24p SD, so it will show in the safe area once I compress it to dvd. Insights?

No can't say I have ever seen that, still, if it is not visible upon play back in camera or at normal frame rate in FC may be a CODEC/pull-down problem.

First and immediate solution would be, providing your framing allows, to crop it out. Though I would be curious about your time line settings, also about any distortion settings you may have on the clips if at all.
Are you shooting 24PA or 24P? Do you put the clips through any pulldown removal? 24p30 has a pulldown on it while 24PA has an advanced pulldown. Slowing footage down in FCP basically means creating more frames artificially. Since these were not tagged like your 24P frames and never had the same pulldown put on them it could be causing this. Can't see how it would but it sounds like the only common denominator between the footage before and after a slow mo.
You can use MXFX a cheap and good solution for removing pulldowns on the native MXF files in a lossless way. Try the free demo version first to see if it works.

It sounds to me like you are shooting 480i and slowing it down in FCP or your NLE.
The best way to get real slow motion in SD if you dont want to deal with multiple formats in post would be to use your P2 card, shoot in 720, then use your camera to downconvert your p2 card to tape.

Then you'll have DV 480i 24pa full squeeze slow motion footage that looks great.

I believe the line you are seeing is because you might have turned frame blending off when you slowed down your footage in post.
Try using something like after effects or motion to slow down your footage instead of FCP/Premier, they have better algorithms and will result in higher quality slo mo. Sometimes its just something you in FCP and not in the final print out. I would recommend printing out a dvd and watching in on a TV to see if it still does it. Normally this blinking line will be outside of the safe area, but since you're shooting squeeze if you watch the footage on a non 16x9 television it will be within the TV area. A quick solution would be to add a matte of 1 or 2 pixels to the top of your project. Chances are no one will ever notice and it will get rid of the blinking for you.

Hope this helps!
Remember that to get the best looking slo mo footage you should shoot it in camera, after all that is one of the most unique features of the HVX.

Good advice,
About my last post MXFX works only on 720 and 1080 for the time being so never mind seeing as you would be better of shooting 720 VFR.

Coming late to this, but yeah I've seen it to on a few projects. It happens when I shoot 480i30p (could happen it 24p as well) and slow it down in FCP. I think it has to do with two things.

1) The HVX when shooting 480i has a single pixel black line at the top of the frame. It's barely noticeable, but very common with these cameras shooting DV. The line is because the images aren't always super clean on the edge and they just put a black line there to cover up that problem. There's a Barry Green explanation somewhere on this website about it.

2) The algorithm used by FCP to slow down an image, somehow takes that top black line and tries to use it from frame to frame in a manner that can double, triple, or neutralize it. Thus creating a jumping effect.

I do a lot of small web commercials with fast turnaround for a company and the problem is sometimes there, yet no one on their end has ever commented or noticed it because the end product ends up playing on such a small screen and it really is barely noticeable. If I were shooting something for a TV or a big screen I would use a different program to do the slow motion or crop it depending.

Hope this helps somewhat!

Hi! and thanks to everyone who commented on this post. It's not just my tired eyes that's seeing all of this. Anyway. VENEZUELAND, "The best way to get real slow motion in SD if you dont want to deal with multiple formats in post would be to use your P2 card, shoot in 720, then use your camera to downconvert your p2 card to tape." How do you do this exactly? I didn't find this in the manual, is this in the HVX book? can you give me details about this process? I appreciate it.

Happy thoughts everyone!
