How to put media back into Avid after hard drive breakdown

Hi People,

Wonder if someone can help! My new system hard drive went down and had to re-install Avid, but don't know how to put the existing MXF and OMFI media back into Avid and to recreate my projects and bins (rushes, sequences, edits etc). The media is all there on the computer media drive, but despite having tried different methods still had no luck in recreating the clips in Avid. Anyone have an idea?

Best regards

Open the media tool, choose to show only Master Clips, select All Drives and hit OK. If there are masterclips there, they'll show up. Just open a bin, select them, and drag them over. You now have master clips in your bins that link to your media.

As far as recreating things--if you lost your project files and your attic files when you hard drive crashed, you have to start from scratch. It may be too late now, but it's good practice to back up your projects often to a thumbdrive or seperate hard drive.

Avid files problem

Thank you! It's possible some files will still be in the Attic folder, could you guide me on what to do with them to restore the bins? You've been a great help.

If you still have your Attic files, then you have your bins. Just copy the files from the attic to your project folder (if you lost all your projects, make a new one and copy them into that at the OS level). If you're on a PC, add .avb to the end of the Attic file names--this way Avid will recognize them at avid bins. Open Avid, open the project, and your bins should be there.

Depending on how many items you have it set to save in the attic and how often, you may recover almost all of your work or not much of it. If you just need to resort your footage into bins, make new bins and put your masterclips where you want them. If you can't recover your sequences from the Attic--man, I hate to tell you but you'll have to restart them from scratch.

Good luck. I hope you're able to recover the majority, or all, of your work. Hard drive failures are awful--I had an old Meridien system who's media drives crashed on me twice--lost everything in the system and had to recapture it all. It was about 30 projects of media, I think.

Let us know if you run into issues or have more questions.

Hallo Michael,

Thanks for your feedback - couldn't retrieve the material so had to start again!! Yes, hard drive problems are no fun. Another problem has arisen - I now have master clips in the bin and suddenly the audio has gone offline!! Trying to bring the audio back (all MFX files) but relink didn't work and scratching my head trying to work out how to bring the master sound back. Kind of painful as I can't work on the timeline for this project. Any thoughts??

Best regards
Alan

relinking will only frustrate you. Youare best off batch capturing from your bins.
Thanks Grinner,

Is there no way of bringing in the material from the drives? The files are staring me in the face and get the feeling that the Avid is not reading the audio, which I don't understand as it was ok last night!! Any thoughts?

try deleting the MSM files in the mediafile directly and force a new database to be created.

Thank you. Not an expert on this, so very nervous about making a bad mistake - there's seems to be 2 MSM files so do i delete both of them? What actually happens after that?! Would it be an idea to delete those MSM files in the other drive where the copies of the files are, just to be safe? I'm mainly concerned about my timeline - if this works will the sound automatically return to the edit?
