Hey Guys,

Just finished this job for a local restaurant. Menu photos and some will be blown up LARGE in the windows of the restaurant.

What do you guys think?

There are some more at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sentrosi/sets/72157605809039333/

The layout designer who was finishing them off for printing said he was impressed and said i would have no trouble finding work around the city.

The final colours will pop more for printing etc, these are a bit muted.

Thanks for looking :)

I think #1 and 2 are a little to tight and shallow (and the whites are not white enough) but I really like the other two. Nice job!

I liked #3 and #4 the best.

(Don't get me wrong, but #2, a close up of a cooked prawns eye is not very appetizing. That being said, I do eat crawfish, so what do I know!)

The focus is way off on the first image...if it was rolled back a couple of inches I think maybe the Depth of Focus would be alright. Its just way past the actually subject. Other than that, that's a good first try at shooting food. Take some of Alveraz's pointers and run with them next time. Good luck!

I see a couple of problems, more that would be a US issue, but maybe a Japanese one too.

First, food needs to look like people think it should. Not what it does, what they picture in their mind when. For instance Lettuce is suppsed to a nice full on green, even though we know in very few instances on a burger or salad is it. Tomatoes are supposed to be a nice deep red, even though the best tasting ones aren't ever.

Also, partially desaturate anything that is NOT the food which is the main subject of the photo. This makes the food really stand out, especially when there are many other items around it. Read is suppose to have a nice golden brown color, even though it's usually more yellow. Same thing with fried food.

Here's an example I did a long time ago:

Compare that to the original.

Dude!....That's one fine lookin cheese burger, just want to copy and paste that sucker right onto my plate.

i mentioned the colours were going to be changed. When i exported them from lightroom they lost a lot of their pop and for printing i went back and fixed that.
As well, the layout designer was going to optimize them. But i agree with the focus comment on the first photo

also good idea with muting the non-food objects. Gotta optimize that POP. :)

Also wasn't my first time shooting food, have done menu's in the past for other restaurants and hope to do more in the future.

thanks for looking.

Also i never got to read the grumpy review :(

i wanna read it!

I don't mind criticism in fact i encourage it. I want to improve, as i'm sure we all do.

Not enough light in #1 and #2 and dof not quite right on #1, yellow color in #2 and #4 but in #3 way to much yellow, need to desaturate it a bit so the food will pop more. Matt Grunau is right if its not food it needs to be in the background and a little softer so the subject will stand out more.

Good luck.
