Tesla announces a $60k, all-electric, five passenger sports sedan
The company has just introduced a fully-electric, five passenger sports sedan dubbed the Model S, which will be selling for $60,000, and will manage 225 miles on a full charge.

Tesla's Elon Musk promises sub-$30k all-electric car in less than four years
Elon Musk began discussing its development of electric car tech to get the price of future cars to (and below) $30,000.
I'm saving up right now.

AWESOME!

These types of products can't come soon enough.

This country needs to get off oil faster than a cat can jump off a hot plate

You will never get rid of oil.

Think of how many people rely on it for jobs. Think of how much you support it, even if it were $5 a gallon. Think about how much of it is left in the earth, a lot!

It is the same with power plants. We have the technology, we just dont want to use it.

Two problems with that. One, we will run out sooner or later, it's a matter of time. So yes we will get rid of oil.

Two, as the demand for oil drops the demand for it's replace will grow and the job force will change with it. Yes, the jobs in the oil industry will reduce/go away but the jobs making and maintaining those electric cars will go up.

irrgardless of oil. Electric cars still need power. that power comes from somewhere....

We need more solar technology. its free. The sun will burn for 5,000,000,000 more years.

Ok Zander.

Oil will not run out in our lifetime, when it does they will worry about it then.

Two, maintaining electric cars is nowhere near the same as the combustion engine. Even the jobs for maintaining that is huge.

Third, if you bought an electric you would still have a gas one as well. How are u going to travel long distances?

So yeah, oil will never die.

P.S I watched Gattaca the other day and laughed. I'm sure when it came out 11 years ago we would be plugging in, but no.

Well purely from an engineering POV, the bicycle is the most efficient machine (bio/mech) combo,

the modern car is an absurd (Engineering POV) concept, why is it necessary that more than two tonns of machine to move something that only weighs around 75-80kg (average human)?

Does anyone drive a Hummer because they need the off road capabilities? It is all about image, people love big cars and make fun of small ones like the smart. Plus i would not want to have a head on while driving a smart either.

I dont have a problem with large cars per se. I think cars should be taxed based on the amount of carbon emissions.

If there was a fully electric car I would buy it based on the facts - how much carbon emission to run it vs how much carbon emission to run a petrol based car. Unless I could go totally solar.

Electric airbus anyone?

I'm pretty sure it takes less energy to run an electric car than a combustion engine vehicle. I believe the Teslsa is rated at 300mpg equivalency.
