portable hard drive suggestion

I'm just starting out - got my HVX200a a few weeks ago. Can anyone recommend a good/fast portable hard drive. I have just two 16 Gig P2 cards and can afford no more. I understand they ideally have 1394/firewire and also need to have their own power supply. I'm looking to safely (and as quickly as possible) dump the files from the cards while at locations.

Love the site!

I have been using simple drive which is USB powered and I can usually get a full day on my dell laptop and drive hooked up on the laptop battery.

Hi Daniel, yeah I know you issue 12 months ago like you. I searched around to try and locate an external portable disk enclosure for my HVX-200 that was SELF=POWERED.

and found a very very good one called the..

NEXTODI CF2525 ULTRA.

refer to my post http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=114853

also BArry Green posted http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=104908

It is magic for OFFLOADING P2 cards from the HVX over 4-6 pin FIREWIRE 400.

Simply buy the enclosure and slap in PATA DDM in it. I believe they take 250GB+ these days.

Set the HVX into 1394 HOST MODE and offload the card you need using the HVX200 menus.

Each CARD offload becomes a partition in the disks (any disk's file system)

I have found this extremely useful when I travel and need to shoot say 1080/50 (110Mbs = about 1GB/min) so my 2 x 16GB cards last about 30+ minutes. Thus too offload is a dream.

The NEXTODI CF2525 is from (manufactured) Korea but you can buy them anywhere on the net I think, else order from the guy here in Hong Kong. I bought mine locally here in Hong Kong last year. It is has a really nice leather case and is very small and portable + cables, power supplu and screwdrivers to open the case a as needed. If you really need a lot more than 250GB then simply buy a few more PATA DDM's and change them in the enclosure as you use them up. TAkes 2 mins.

You can buy additional EXTERNAL batteries for it as well.
never let me down.

Be aware it is NOT like a FS100 so you cannot record directly to it.

FOr a cheap alternative for portability self powered storage for P2 without the need to RECORD, this is a very good solution.

Thanks so much for the good advice I'm looking into these suggestions and also one from an article Barry wrote re: using a cheap PC laptop. Much appreciated!!!

I picked up a pair of Western Digital Passport drives which are bus powered and highly regarded. They're tiny and come with a small padded case.
