1080 / 24pa is recorded on 29.97 fps timeline?!

SO, we usually shoot 720pn, when imported into FCP2 it automatically changes the settings to 720p 23.98 timeline.

SO, recently, we decided to transition to 1080/24pa for better resolution. I keep hearing all these arguments of that it is actually 1080i, but with the 24(P) it's progressive, screw it, I'm left here thinking it's progressive and it is!

BUT, according to Panasonic team @ CineGear, when exported into quicktime movie, it will be a 23.98 timeline... sorry panny, but that's bs, because here I am playing back a short clip, apple+I on quicktime, and it states FPS: 29.97

ALSO, the format states it is 1280x1080, but current size states it is 1920x1080...

I'm kind of confused... if any of you have knowledge about these problems, PLEASE do share your solution to export as 23.98 timeline off 1080/24pa

THANKS,

First, are you sure you shot at 24pA instead of 24p?

Second, prior to ingesting the footage what codec did you select in the audio/video settings?

yes im 100% sure i shot it in 24pA

Final Cut 2 automatically detected my settings, they put down DVCPRO HD 1080p30

ill do some testing again right now

I'm a noob w/ cinema tools, want to explain the procedure?

I manually changed the FPS to 23.98
and compressor to DVCPRO HD 1080i60p

exported the timeline, and it seems to be good, but... the duplicate frames... im guessing is still present?

If you have shot the footage with pA and not p, you do not need to use Cinema Tools. Before you ingest the footage, start with a new project or sequence and set your video codec to DVCPro HD 1080/24pA in audio/video settings (under the File menu). When FCP pulls the footage in, it will automatically remove the pulldown if (a) your footage is in fact pA and (b) you've selected the correct codec.

Doing it this way should result in clean footage.

P.S. The foregoing assumes you still have the original HVX footage and that you can re-ingest it as opposed to trying to rework the FCP QT files.

I think I just found a solution, correct me if my workflow is slightly off...

-Log & Transfer the P2 Card (yes I checked the remove pulldown, even though it didn't)
-Highlighted all the clip
-Clicked on "Tools" --> "Remove Advanced Pulldown"
-Dragged a clip onto the timeline to let FCP detect raw settings.

Verdict: Timebase is now 23.98
Compressor is now 1080p30
Pixel Aspect Ratio is now HD (1280x1080)

Thanks... again, let me know if what I did was away from the norm...
