Are you guys gonna miss the tape drive in the HPX170?

And by the time the HPX170 is out, I bet the 32GB cards will be available too (or very shortly thereafter). With two 32GB cards you should be able to record over five hours of DV in-camera with no swapping.

BG,

I'll make you a deal right now on a couple 32 gig cards :):)

We use the HVX200 's as B-C cams and never used tape on them. Funny enough, last month an occasion came up where we needed to shoot tape with it as the client wanted 2 varicams and a throw away hvx200, all on tape.

We looked like ben stiller and owen wilson from zoolander trying to use a MAC.

I don't know whether you're joking about this and/or the tape drive question, but yes, the HVX has a mini-DV tape drive, tapes are available for a few bucks everywhere including gas station convenience stores, and the 32GB P2 cards have been out for a while now:

P2 since 2006 and never looked back. We'll be selling our HVX200 for a HPX170 here in the weeks to come.

whats the major advantages to upgrading to the hpx170 besides it being lighter?

it would be nice to have a lighter hd cam. if the hpx170 includes a 16gb or a 32gb then i'm sold, especially since i have a 16gb p2 and a coupla 4gb's.

no, taped worked for me before P2, but since using P2 it's impossible for me to go back to tape,

I had a situation a couple of weeks ago where I quickly went to shoot something for our church, and I forgot my P2 cards, there was a tape in the camera bag, and not wanting to drive all the way back, I used the tape.

I'm almost still a little angry with myself for not taking the P2 cards, it was such a pain working with tape again, shooting and especially post.

Alright, stop bragging about all your tapeless workflow you elitists. Like I said, i hate tape too. I probably hate it more than you guys because I'm still poor and every once in a while I have to take an event videography job to pay my rent and get reminded why I hate tape so very much. You don't have to make me feel like a leper.

As for two 16-gig cards, i don't know if I'll be able to afford that even though it seems like an optimal solution. I still use the two 4 gigers I've had since owning an HVX200. I still take a laptop with me to my gigs, hot swap when needed, and get through the damn thing. I'm at that state where I'm getting more jobs and, if I could use it all to re-invest in my business, I'd be a happy man but I gotta deal with rent and the constantly rising price of gas.

David,

If shooting tape, you'd be shooting DV- right? A lot of DV footage can fit on even some of the smaller P2 cards. DV + P2 mitigates the expense (at least some) and shorter record times of shooting P2. Maybe having a "P2 only" camera wouldn't be so bad for DV/event capture in the end run after all ....? Investing in another tape camera at this stage in the game would make me a little apprehensive .

I have an occasional client that I shoot DV for, I'll be holding onto my HVX-200 for a bit. It's a turn and burn gig where I hand the tape off for someone else to post. In this case being able to shoot tape still works for me, otherwise C-ya tape ! If I could make a P2 workflow work in this situation, I would and tape would go the way of the Wooly Mammoth for me.

I can't wait for the 170 and a tape free future.

Yes, I would. I like having the ability to shoot tape. More than once, i've been asked to give it to them on tape and not on P2 or FS. I still don't understand why they wouldn't want the tape deck in the camera. It's not like the HVX was a big camera to begin with.

Ted,

I was quoting BG from a previovs post about the 32 gig cards... (Just out of fun:))

Off topic but I have used 5 mini dv tapes in my HVX and the hour meter says 60 hours on the tape drive... 350 hours on the P2 side, that is also way over stated...

I figured the P2 hour meter would count any time powered up, but I hadn't considered the tape side. Maybe it's the same idea - all hours powered up while in tape mode, not just drum hours.

I recently sold my 200 and bought a 200a. It (the 200) had 90 hours P2 and zero tape. Nonetheless I like having the tape drive. Maybe some day I'll actually use it : )

I haven't shot on tape for years, but the tape drive occasionally gets used if a client has something on miniDV that they want me to capture in. I don't have a seperate miniDV tape drive so just hook up the HVX.

Had to do that recently too. I officially hate myself for using my HVX200 as a deck.

I've been working on a feature in HD. I keep a tape in to capture behind-the-scenes moments... that way I can hand off the data to one crew and the tape to another. Not that I make the behind-the-scenes stuff a priority, but I can get stuff the other cameraperson sometimes can't.
