Hi, Does anyone know how to achieve the soft glowing skin look we see in the Britney Spears videos, and those of Jennifer Lopez?

Can it be done in After Effects, or would I need some other software?

Thanks!

Start with an Adjustment layer and a duplicate layer with BLUR applied and play with opacity on the duplicate layer eg 10%

Here is a quick`n dirty approach.

I done it in Photoshop but in AfterFX it works the same way.

I took a (not verry pleasing) photo of me.

1 Double the layer and switch the top layer to "multiply"
2. Use a big amount of gausian blur (between 6 and 9) on the top layer.
3. See - I look like Britney now.

Everything else is done by makeup and light.

I second that, I have been seen some before and afer on the skin that would blow your socks off, kinda the photoshop way of making the skin pop, and have a porcelain look to it, but its is being used everyday on music videos etc.

You'd be shocked how much of some videos/commercials soft look is post work and not makeup.

No masking out the skintones?
I´d add a softened key going for the skin tones...

i do this all the time by keying skin tone and applying blur. i use keylight and gaussian blur. also, in fcp there is a plug called compound blur that automatically isolates skin tones. then you just dial in the amount. it goes from very subtle all the way to the ultra smooth artificial willy wonka look.

here ya go. i did this just now by keying and blurring.

Ok, now how do I get the sharpness?

Hi everyone, thanks for all the help!

The winning combinaison is the skin tone keying plus blur. I had the best result using the grain reduction of AE at an extreme setting, sampling only the skin, but it takes forever to render.

Now, How do those Britney Spears and J. LO Technicians get that Extra sharp edge enhanced look? I used a HVX-200 and focused looking at a full HD, 40 inch LG monitor, but my image isn't as sharp as theirs. Detail level was at +2 and I shot at f4.0 or full open iris for the close shots. I will post pics when I get home tonight.

In the meantime, any ideas?

Probably by grading and manipulating footage shot on 35mm (I guess for J.Lo and alike this still is the case...)
Even if they do all the post work in SD, the image simply is better than an image from a 1/3inch prosumer HD camcorder.
