Music Video shot in Mexico with Local Pretty Girls

Okay, here is my second music video ever. I would love to get some feedback on it since it was a very difficult shoot for me due to money / crew / time constraints. For example, I had to edit it and color "correct" it (if you can call it that) out in the field on my 5-year-old 688 Mhz first-generation G4 laptop (in HD of course, which the laptop could barely handle).

A FEW DETAILS

So anyway, this was a no-budget production shot over two days with the HVX200. I was the producer, director, DP, writer, editor, etc , as well as in charge of locations and casting (which included me having to go to local clubs on a wednesday night and pulling aside any potential pretty girls to be considered for the main part as well as for all bit parts and extras) ...oh, and I had only three people as crew on the actual shoot... which I had to train myself to the best of my abilities since in that part of Mexico there aren't any crew members available. All three did an excellent job.

The music is obviously not mine. It is a Grupero band from Mexico that wanted a video with some sort of story dealing with an impossible love. So please judge the music separately from the visuals. As far as the visuals I was allowed to do anything I wanted as long as it was a story. The only requirement was that I could NOT show or single out in any way the singer from the band. The stress stemmed mostly because I had to come up with and be in charge of almost everything, while away in a strange city. This included me having to secure locations in bars and restaurants with very picky owners during their regular business hours (without, of course, paying them anything). Anyway, enough ramblings... just let me know what you think and what I can improve on. Your feedback will be very much appreciated.

Sorry can't comment as the video appears to no longer exist on vimeo.

Are you sure? I think you may not have installed the latest version of flash to view the site's HD content. The clip shows statistics that it has been played 68 times since I posted it this morning. I would still love to hear what you think.

Yes sad finish I really liked the story. I think you should have maybe had some longer dissolves when fading in between cuts. Good job overall.

Thanks for the comments. Wow, watching it without sound is a tough test... I am so glad the story/visuals still held up on their own.

I think this was a good effort. Visually it had a very high quality look. The only thing I would say is that you tended to linger on shots too long. To solve that problem though you would've needed to shoot more angles to have different shots to cut away to. Also I felt the opening scene didn't really benefit from having it start before the music did. I know you were trying to avoid cliches, but throughout you kind of had the girl oblivious, I think it would've been better if the guy had dropped the flowers in front of her door during the struggle, then she could've picked them up and given a look as if she was searching for the possibility of love too. I dunno, just a thought...

I'll keep this in mind for the next one. I think you are right that I needed more coverage. It was hard to pack all the locations in just two days and therefore didn't have enough time to do more setups. But I know, this should not be an excuse.

Ha! This was exactly the original ending that we shot! We then also shot the ending in the final version of the video thinking that maybe it would be a bit more different or more memorable. But who knows... By the way, if you pause the video just before it fades to black you can see the shadow of the flowers creeping into frame as he is sitting on the sidewalk. That was the remnant from the other ending. Anyway, thanks for your comments.

The lights I had were 4 Kino 4-banks, a 2K tungsten, and a 1.2K HMI which broke down within the first 3 hours :crybaby: ...And that was it as far as lights were concerned. I really wish I had 1K's and 650w Tungstens. But the equipment was what it was. But as a consolation price I had the HVX pimped out with Zacuto and a Panasonic HD monitor (I love that monitor... I love focus-in-Red!!!). Below are some picts. Please feel free to ask more questions or even give me more feedback as I want to know how I can improve on this for the next video (for that one I'll be using the Letus EX with Zeiss zf lenses :2vrolijk_08:)

Hey man... I thought you said this was a no-budget video! Surely those lights would have been expensive to hire!? Not to mention the huge monitor, tripod and matte you got...
As far as visuals I will say this is one of the best efforts I've seen on vimeo, the story could have been edited or scripted better, but the visuals almost looked like a high-end broadcast studio production. Some of the outdoors shots were a bit pale, but overall great look. I hope you got paid well cause this looks really professional.

Thank you so much for your comments.

All the gear pictured is mine. So what I mean is that there was no additional budget for anything beyond what I happened to own.

:cheesy: This has made my day... Hell, this has made my year! Thanks. Feedback like this inspires me to do even better for my third video.

This only goes to show the importance of lighting. The outdoor shots were pickup shots with just me and the actor and the matteboxless camera. We didn't have a permit and we were on government property so we couldn't even get a bounce card in there or anything. (I'm talking about the shots with the poster). But I learned that for next time, it is worth risking jail time in order to get good lighting  .
