How many hours is ok for the heads? Do you have to put in new once after a certain while or can you just keep using head tapes? I heard the head cleaning is quite expensive
No sure about the cost of cleaning but Barry Green I believe has a tutorial online here for cleaning the heads yourself. As the heads I believe are quite expensive you would only want to replace them if they should ever go out. This is not something you just want to shell out as preventative I don't believe.
Oh, and the title of your thread brought me here cause I thought you were making a horror movie and wanted to know how long a severed head could interact with the rest of the cast.

It depends on what you put your camera through. My experience is mostly with Sonys but I am guessing the DVX would be similar (well, except for parts availability) If you are inside on a tripod all day I have a friend who has well over 1000 hours and has not had any problems. I had another friend that made it 300 hours because he made a habit of reusing tapes.
Be aware that using those head cleaner tapes too much can cause your heads to fail more quickly. They are very abrasive on the heads and should only be used when you have a problem and not as preventive maintenance.
