3 new Terminator films Confirmed. The new trilogy kicks off Summer 2009

The Tapeless One
Christian Bale is to play rebel leader John Connor in three sequels to the Terminator franchise, its producers have revealed.

The Welsh-born star, who is soon to be seen in Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight, has already started shooting the first of those films, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

"He's really an actor's actor, so we're very proud," said Victor Kubicek of film company Halcyon.

Charlie's Angels director McG is directing the new film, which is due to be released on 22 May 2009.

"Christian was our first choice and he's a big fan of The Terminator, so we're very lucky," Kubicek told the BBC at the Cannes Film Festival.
"But with Batman he's already done the whole franchise thing, so we weren't sure he'd respond."

Luckily, said Kubicek's business partner Derek Anderson, "he read the script and he loved it, so he's signed on for all three."
US rap star Common will also have a lead role in the film, as will Australian actor Sam Worthington, who will soon be seen in Titanic director James Cameron's science-fiction epic Avatar.

Schwarzenegger played the Terminator in three blockbuster films
The producers would not reveal whether Arnold Schwarzenegger would reprise his role as the Terminator. Nor would they discuss character names or plot details.
"We can't talk about the story points at all," said Kubicek, adding the project was being kept strictly under wraps.

"Not everyone gets to see the script. They only see the part of the script that's relevant to the job they're doing."

But the producers promised not to disappoint fans of the time-travelling franchise, which has also spawned TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
"We're both huge Terminator fans and we're just approaching it from the point of view of what we'd like to see," said Anderson.

"Any time we're feeling pressure we just take a step back and say, as fans, 'what would we like to see?'"

Hope they do it well and don't screw it with overdone cgi and all that..... cause I really like the previous ones.

Aint It Cool has been covering this pretty extensively, including a full on spoiler of the 'twist' ending.

The moment I read that... well any interest, excitement, or desire surrounding this film died.

EDIT:

SPOILER LINK TO STORY

Now, regardless of whether this is true or just complete internet fodder, like I said, I have absolute no interest in this franchise anymore.

T2 was groundbreaking for the FX, but doesn't hold up to the test of time
T3 was absolute crap except for the ending which sort of validated the mythology

Two problems- One, they waited too long to do a trilogy, Judgment Day will be here before they could finish them, and two, a Terminator has more Human-like characteristics than Bale. Sorry, but he just isn't very exciting.

Charlie's Angels was ok, but not great. I can't say I have seen too much of his stuff, but my wife and I love Supernatural on WB, so I can't be too negative about him.

I actually liked the first charlie's angels. But I will give the guy a chance. He was hired so someone must believe in his abilities. Plus coming from Music Videos my self, it is always a pleasure to see directors from that world do big budget hollywood fare.

i like McG. He has a cool style, if not a little too slick. These movies, however, I'm not so sure about. Not the biggest Bale fan. The only thing he's got going for him (imho) is that he takes his job verrrrrrrrrrrryyyyy seriously. So at the very least he puts in a decent performance.

If you haven't seen the Katie Holmes/McG Punk'd scene, it is maybe one of the funniest things I've seen. It's from a few years ago, before Katie turned into a robot (poor girl). It's hard not to like McG after this.

Why all the hate on Bale? He always turns in an awesome performance. American Psycho, The Machinist, that Werner Hertzog movie whose title escapes me, Batman Begins, and oh yeah, Equilibrium, which would have been even more cheesy than it already is without his acting. And 3:10 to Yuma of course. He's so good that I actually want to watch Reign of Fire. That's sayin something.

You really think he's good? I always feel like he's serviceable. Like a good plumber. He comes in and does the job, but never does anything exceptional. The Machinist was a disaster, with him becoming so skinny to "prove" what a dedicated actor he was, that he actually took the focus away from the movie (since you were always so focused on his weight -- "Is that safe?"). I feel the same about the reest of those movies. They're all decent. But none of them are exceptional.

Well then you disagree with the actor himself. He heartily admits as much about the Machinist - which he says he got too skinny for to the point of distraction.

As for the other films, I guess it's a matter of opinion. Besides Batman Begins, which I guess people love (I thought it was average), most people would agree that his other movies were okay at best.

I have to agree that his thinness was distracting ("Damn that's dedication!"), but I still found the movie to be excellent. I guess it's a matter of opinion. And mine is the right one!

Honestly Reign of Fire probably sucks (haven't seen it). Harsh Times was "decent." A film like American Psycho or The Prestige on the other hand will be returned to and referenced for a while. He's done some high-caliber work as an extremely underrated actor and now it looks like he's made it to the big time as Batman. I just hope the Terminator movies don't tank his career because of McG.

After Terminator 3, Alien vs. Predator, and Indy 4, I am not too keen on resurrecting these 80's classics 15 to 20 years later. I do have to admit that I enjoyed the few episodes I have seen of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I wasn't expecting much, but it delivered. About a week ago I caught a little of Terminator 3 on cable. Played much better than when it came out, although it still doesn't come close to the original or T2.

However, I wish the Terminator 4 production good luck. I am glad that they are finally focussing on the future war with Skynet. This one should be different since we've only seen glimpses of the future war in the past films. McG seems an odd choice, but he may surprise us. He certainly seems to have the technical skills to provide some nice visuals. Bale hasn't disappointed me with any of his performances.

One thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is the title. Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Just seems odd. I would go with something more like -- The Terminator: Age of Skynet, or The Terminator: Nuclear Empire, or something like that.

I could say that I wish Cameron were returning to take the helm, but then we might not get AVATAR. Way more pumped about that one personally. Also, Cameron is supposed to follow up Avatar with Battle Angel, an adaptation of the manga series of Battle Angel Alita which takes place in a post apocalyptic world with various humans, cyborgs, and robots.

I have to disagree with you on T2. Its an excellent movie. Far better than T1. T1 would have been a cheap Sci-Fi movie that use to come on Cinemax if not for Arnold. I love T1 but T2 was a better film overall.

Now T3 was just a pile of junk and it effectively killed any interest I had in the series.

Reign of Fire is an enjoyable movie. Much better than I thought going into it. I recommend watching it.

As for Bale, I think he is a great acting. He is one of the few actors today that I look out for. He was good in Empire of the Sun and has just kept getting better since.

I whole heartedly agree with every word you've said. You nailed it right on the head. T2 is an excellent movie in so many ways, and one of the few sequels truly better than its predecessor. The third one made me wanna cry. It was absolutely terrible. A total piece of crap.
