Editing HARDWARE Card, Necessary now days?

[minifobman]

Hi guys.
I use to edit video back in 2001 & 2002 using Adobe Premiere 6. At that time I use to need a powerful $700.00 (a lot of money for a card in them days) video card for real-time rendering. I been reading the forums for a while and I don't read anywhere that users use such cards for editing anymore...

Am I missing something or, is real-time rendering now possible with software?

I'm getting ready to get back into this again and just checking out what all is needed now days.

I don't remember hearing anything about Vegas in them days it was all about Adobe Premiere.

I had this Pinnacle card : http://www.videomaker.com/article/8631/

It sure made editing video MUCH faster...

Does anyone here use a capture card like this now days? If so, what are you using and how does it compare to yesteryears cards?

Here I see that these cards are in fact, in use today but very expensive!!!

Which cam do you intend to capture from in what format and with what intended delivery?

XHA1 cam. Mostly HD content.

Currently I only have an ATI card with dual monitors. No Firewire
