Time Stacked - A Film by Kurt Jewell

Love the picture of your son with the hail. I grew up in Kansas and have fond memories of putting those big old hail balls in the freezer. I think your boy needs to become "The Time Fest Kid" to get his moment of celebrity around here:

Really slick opening title!
The audio was excellent throughout. Loved the "look" at the camera as well, that was classic. :D
You excelled at going after the theme and the ending was great.

My only real gripe was the music cycling in the background.

Nice work.

I liked this - had some really funny moments, and all that green screen work!!! Good grief that's a lot of work. Thank you! Very enjoyable.

Yeah, I waited too long to get audio help. In the end it was my wife and I (again). My wife was making comments late on submission night and I turned to her and said it felt like we were rearrange deck chairs on the Titanic. I made a vow then and there to get some real musical help for my next short.

Thanks for the nice comments!

Nice work, Kurt! I love the style of this one, especially the opening shot. The off-kilter almost fish-eye low tracking shot is very evocative of the great 80's comedies like "Ferris Bueller" and "Better Off Dead". Even though you went with a time machine story, it felt fresh and clever, mostly because of the dialog and especially because of the ending. Nice work with "Alex, Alex, and Alex" scene, too. Another fun film, Kurt! :)

Thanks for the nice comments. It's interesting how the way a film starts off sets the stage for the production. I'll have to keep that in mind for my next film.

A nice modern version of cinderella. I loved the fairy. The scene with the three Alex was from the tecnical aspect very well. I enjoyed it.

"eyy buck up bambino" hahah.

good film, i felt it really worked on the levels you wanted it to work.

Good film and a great job on the green screen...it was a lot of fun!
Can't wait to see the next one.

Kinda reminds me of the Calvin and Hobbes story where Calvin went to the future at 6:30 to get his homework after it had been completed, but his 8:30 self hadn't done it because he had gone into the future at 6:30, so they realize that the 7:30 Calvin was the only one who could do it, and then he refused, and they were going to fight, and then the three Hobbes ended up writing the homework assignment for him.

*ahem*

Needless to say, I'm a big fan of Calvin and Hobbes, so this one rang true with me.

Enjoyable performances, especially with the lead acting with himself in the greenscreen setups.

EDIT - The *ahem* is not meant to imply I think that's where you got the story, just me getting off my geeking out over C&H.

Glad you connected with the story. My kids are big C&H fans too, so I have seen the story. Calvin is such an interesting character study. Bill Waterson hits the nail on the head as far as how people's minds work.

Thanks for the kudo's on my actors!

Wesley - Glad you thought Time Stacked worked.

ZazaCast - Thanks for the encouragement. More films to come!

The shot where the character grabs the directions from himself was awesome. I liked the intro, very teenaged movie (sorta American Pie in my mind). I enjoyed the execution, wish I was that talented. Good job.

The character grabbing the stuff from himself was awesome. The VFX greenscreen work needed a ton of help as their faces kept dissapearing when they would turn sideways, but the timing and layering for those other leads worked great! Cool concept, with a funny ending!

The intro to this is awesome. It immediately captured me and drew me in. As someone else said, I love the 80s-esque low-angle dolly shot. From there, it never lost my attention. The plot is well thought out and funny.

There were a few jump cuts that stood out -- best way to avoid this is "the 30 degree rule", which states you should move the camera at least 30 degrees between cuts. As with all rules, it can be broken, but it's a good basic guideline to avoid awkward cuts where your actors obviously change position.

I think as a whole, it could have been condensed a bit more. There were a few long pauses that I felt could have been safely chopped down. Also, as someone else mentioned, I don't think you should have kept that same looping music clip throughout the entire video. It was effective in the beginning, but as the film went on simply drew attention to itself.

I really have to commend you on all the greenscreen and post work. That must have been a hassle to work through. Nicely done.

Thanks for the comments and your insight. There are several cuts that I was less than thrilled with. One of my issues was that I only scheduled 1 day for filming and hence I rushed just a bit and didn't get enough coverage shots at more angles. I'll keep that 30 degree rule in my back pocket for next time. Making films is a learning activity.

Thanks!
