Do you think things would be different now if you had been accepted, and even won an award at a film fest?

Don't see how they could be. A film fest award is always good but to really count for publicity purposes it has to be a big, recognized fest and a real award.

Best slasher pic at the Kenosha midnight Horror debacle is not something I wanted on my resume - lol!

on top of that, it would have to be an audience award, specifically, for it to get the attention of anyone with money or distro contacts. jury awards are okay, but not ideal -- it's well known juries give their award to the film that "the best film most in need of our help" and not necessarily "the best film". audience awards -- if you're going to pimp your film at a festival, that's the award to aim all your pimpage at.

Kenosha's a good town, though! I'm a licensed forklift operator there!

Saw Johnny Messner last night in a short called "Our Time Is Up" with Kevin Pollack. It's pretty great, check it out when you get the chance (it'll be up in YouTube's Screening Room later today I think).

Ha!!!

How was Johnny in it???

He was good, hard to say though because I felt like his character was a little more one-note than most of the others. Check it out if you get the chance though.

I've seen that short (actually bought it on iTunes a while back since it was up for a short film Oscar a year ago) and I just noticed that is Johnny. Cool.

All the characters were pretty simple and had very simple arcs, but he did a good job imho.

just to bring a thoroughly ironic twist to this amazing thread... I just agreed to a very attractive, non-exclusive (which means I still own the film) deal that covers DVD, Video on Demand, digital downloads, etc for my 9 minute short film (with no names attached) called "I F*cking Hate You" made with a budget of $240 and available resources.

but, listen up!! IFHY is the exception to the rule. this doesn't negate anything adam has shared with us here... just know that it is possible if you're willing to do the work and make the calls and lose a lot of sleep. times, they are a-changin'.

Obviously, I wouldn't ask that you share the price you sold your short for, but in general (and i know it depends on 100 factors) what would be the amount at the upper end of the spectrum that a short film could sell for? I know that there are short film channels, but are they big enough money makers to pay out for a short?

in exactly one month I will be able to discuss details. sorry. can't speculate either as this is the first short i ever made. all my experience really comes from feature filmmaking.

Well, yesterday we got the remainder of the scenes to finish Corrado. It was a good day, albeit a late night shooting.

It's weird to finally have the whole thing in the can. Oh, I might be missing a transition or something, but every stitch of dialog in the script is now shot. We redid a major ending scene that wasn't working last time, and got a way stronger performance out of it.

It was a good time. I'll miss my crew!!!! I can't wait to assemble the team and do it again.

I'm now inching ever closer to the elusive goal of picture lock.

Andy,

How was it working with Ken Kercheval? A friend of mine worked with him in the film "Surviving In LA" and thought he was a terrific actor. For somebody who does not work that much I have always enjoyed his work as an actor.

Adam and all,
I had a question that I would assume you have experience with. I am starting out in Los Angeles soon and wanted to rent out cameras to projects for side money. I was thinking of purchasing a HVX200 at first (because I feel it would get the best returns for the reasonable price). That way I can make money but also use it for my work if need be.

Have you heard of people doing this that aren’t working for a vendor?

So do you think people would have a demand for camera rentals? What accessories would be best/necessary to include in the package (that is reasonable in price)? Again, this is just for starting. After paying off some of the parts, I can invest in more equipment. Thank you for giving me your wisdom. This post is amazing and a ton of inspiration.
Also, if you think the HVX200 isn't the way to go, let me know.
