720p vs. 1080p for film converstion ?( & HVX200 vs Jvc HD100u)

Hi All,

As I was reading the religious wars between the HVX200 and hd100u users regarding mainly differences of 4:1:1 vs. 4:2:2 , over/under cranking, workflow, HDV vs. DVCPRO HD codec, lenses and pulling chromakeying (Which was proved to be the same between the HVX and the 100u) I was wondering the following:

1. Has any1 tested the differences between converting/transfering 720p vs. 1080p to 35mm? I'm specifically referring to the use of HVX200 vs. HD100u since some DP's said that they shot films in 720p and transferred to 35mm since they didn't think the non native (up-res=upping the resolution) of 1080p which is done on the HVX200 (pixel shifting) would yield any benefit! some even said they thought it would cause the transfer to 35mm film look de-focused or "soft".
Any comments on that?

2. On the same note, assuming that there is a benefit shooting 1080p with the HVX200 - > If I was to use the Hd100U in 720p and then "upped" the resolution in my post NLE - wouldn't it be the same as I am basically scaling the image (doubling lines of resolution) - or maybe that would yield even a better result since the sensor of the hd100u is even higher resolution and the editing suite has more "time" to calculate the conversion vs. whats done in real time in the HVX200?

I hope some1 did the tests in conversion of hvx200 1080p to film and then hd100/110u 720p to film to compare and shed some light on the subject.

Best,
Steve

Steve i also really wonder about a real professional test about this printing thing.I saw a test which is really terrible and i also saw a movie in cinema which is color graded with autodesk 2k,and it was amazing.As far as i remember there is some thricks in barry's book about printing to film(about gamma settings etc..) I am planning to shoot a feature movie with my hvx and M2,but i am scared about the result on the cinema screen:(

Hi Lumiere,

I think I saw your post somewhere last night going back and forth with the DP of one of the movies.

A great resource would be a film called Gabriel -> www.gabrielmovie.com - this was shot using JVC hd100u and was picked up for distribution by one of the major guys. I looks AMAXZING on the PC in SD but I wonder how the film conversion looks like.

If I had the $$$ I would go for the RED/RED SCARLET camera ... :) That would be the BEST film transfer.

How do you like your HVX? I'm really torn between the HVX and the hd100u - if the test proves to be the same between 720p and 1080p then I am going for the hd100u since you can use cheap tape vs SD media and the LENS is worth it (off course the interchangeable lens ability is great as well)

Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on the subject.

Best,
Steve

steve;

Before i bought my hvx i was really searching and confused between hvx and jvc (but probably not that model,dont remember).Then i bought hvx and it really suprised me with its performans.İ think we are not disscussing which camera is best for film print in all area.My aim is to make it with my own camera:)In fact you're right we can use red or D20- whatever for a cinema release movie,why we should force ourselves for a little hd camera:)
The best workflow we are planning with a froeign DP,to shoot the movie with 1080/25p(i am in a PAL region)and the slow motion scenes with 720.Then uprezz the 720 scenes to 1080.But the thrick and question marks starts in that point.How will it look like the uprezz scenes after film transfer:((We decided to make a 1 minute test in different settings.Color grading with luster,and then print it to film over arrilaser.I think everything is according to cinematography.As i said before it may be like a sh..t.Or acceptable.
In my country people shooting many feature movies and selling them to Tv channels without any cinema release.There is no problem in this case.
Are u planning to buy a camera or trying to figure out which camera to choose for your film?

Hi Lumiere,
If I had the $$$ I would go for the RED/RED SCARLET camera ... :) That would be the BEST film transfer.

Red has said that the Scarlet camera is going to sell for less than $3000, almost half the price of an HVX200.

Davide;

Do you have any idea when it will be ready to order.Any gossip from NAB?There is not too much detailed information about it.I think i would prefer scarlet rather then red:)
