MovieMaker Mag Top 50 Film Websites...didn't include DVXuser?

OK guys, now pretend you're looking around for a site and you see one named DVXuser.com.

Panasonic DVX video camera, hmm says the guy looking for a site, I have a Canon, better keep looking.

The name says it.

If i'm wrong (always a possibility) please direct me to Sonyuser, or Canonuser etc. This place has lots of info, but how many sites do you ignore because of the name, regardless of whether it might be a good site. You aren't going to look on DVXuser.com if you own a JVC. and you won't go to Reduser.com if you want info and own a Sony. If you're looking for a filmmaking site, you "generally" want either a generic type site with a wide range of info, or one specific to your camera. I'll bet you Panasonic types seldom read the Sony forums for shooting info specific to your Panasonic.

Perhaps time for a name change to reflect the broader scope of this site?

Misguided...no. Realistic.

There is some element of logic here, DVXuser has a long history that newcomers will not know about and in that sense yes the name may not reflect what DVXuser has now become.

But on the other hand, its because of the history DVXuser has become what it is.

wow, I'm speechlees this is something I can't say yes or no to.

He makes a good argument. To the majority of us who are members, this site is alot more than about the DVX, but to those outside lookin in who knows nothing about this site, they will automatically asume this is a Panasonic DVX only forum.

I myself, specifically came here because of the DVX, then I stayed to learn about filmmaking....

So this is a great site for filmmaking, it's just hard to argue Chase's point.

But I have to disagree with the name change.

thought I was going to have to save Chase. He is right.

As far as namechange...
How about "The website formerly known as dvxuser" as a new name..with a wierd symbol next to it.

New name? that's just crazy talk.

And I'm perfectly content without an additional 100,000 members stumbling all over the place, asking the same questions over an over, and giving out bad advice. If I wanted that, I'd just go over to... I dunno... the movie maker magazine forums (although after checking, there's only 1556 registered members over there. But you get my point).

New name... certainly not.

However, it is a good and valid point. Without some pre-existing notion about the depth of this forum or other prequalification, if your Interweb search returned DVXUser for "digital filmmaking", you might decide to skip it and go to say, DVinfo or Cinematography.

Just based on the marquee.

Now, once you're here and take a moment to see what's available... that's when new users will discover the true, varied depth of what DVXUser is. By comparison, few other sites come close to this one for quality of members and information.

I actually disagree that the name is much of an issue(with a few exceptions). If you start doing google searches about filmmaking topics in general, you'll start seeing the dvxuser sight come up quite a bit. That should tell you something. If it doesn't you aren't paying attention. People don't find this site because of the name (unless it is recommended to them)

I didn't own any cameras when I found this site, I was just doing research. In fact I didn't even know that the DVX was a panny camera. I would have looked at it if it was called XL1user, or whatever. I was trying to get info on different aspects of filmmaking. Once I found it, I pulled up a chair and made it my home.

I think that anybody who is really out there doing their homework, they will know what this site has to offer. Who exactly are we losing with the name? People who are blindly loyal to a different brand and make a judgment without checking into a site. No loss there.

The term "DVX" will soon no longer be related with a particular camera, aided by it's eventually demise, but evolve to represent "independent film making"- or something similar. It's been headed that way for years just by the number of non-DVX specific forums, comments and inquiries.
DVXbonics so-to-speak......

I also think that once they "discover" this place and find out whats up they will add it to the so called list. This place is the ultimate online film school.

When I first found this site, I also did not own any cameras... I didn't know what a DVX was? But I remember just sitting down reading threw these posts and in that 30 min I had already learned more than any other site I had previously seen. I think it's better that we aren't on a stupid list. You cannot rank knowledge.

fortunately, i'm one of the only ones here that is like that. :cheesy:

And then you went and made a film instead of sitting on your ass thinking that you possibly couldn't make a film. Way to go. It's more than other people your age (and older) have ever done. They just sit around talking about how cool it would be and never actually DO anything.

if there's one this this site has taught me (and it's taught me a lot) is that the only way to learn is by doing it and then doing it again. And it doesn't matter what camera you have, just as long as you have the vision and the need to MAKE a movie... it's not about what gear you have, it's how you use it dammit.

dude Rolling Stone's Top 100 guitarists list didn't even include Steve Vai, John Petrucci, or Joe Satriani. Van Halen was all the way down at like 86 or something too. The point is: magazines make dumb lists all the time, ignore them and they will go away.

Dude, don't get me started on Rolling Stone. Britney has been on the cover like 8 times. Rush? zero.

Lame rag.

these sorts of lists are made by people who create entire careers based on
nothing. the world is currently filled with these people. they "live" off the blood, sweat, and tears of others. they call themselves experts and then they judge.

real experts don't make lists, they make films.
