Hey evreybody I posted a couple days ago and you all helped me out. Want to see if I can get more help. I just got my P2 cards and I got a shoot tomarrow and using the camera for the first time and I have no idea what im doing. LOL I keep geting diferent reports at what to shoot at 720 1080 . Im trying to get the best qualitey and the setings in the most simplest way to get a basic scene under my belt. I was told to shoot at the 720 24p and not at the 1080. Beacuse it takes up more space on the card and in post I can bump it up to 1080. I have no idea what im doing can some one help me out and tell me the settings I should set evreything at. Thank you very much.
Ive been messing with this thing and reeding the book for the last 2 hrs.

Sorry about that evreything is just a blur. I shoot adult. I have allways used the Sony FX1. We are now doing evreything in HD and Blue Ray. So the guy im working for wants it to look the best. I have 3 kino 4 footers plus a bar fly for my C. I have a bit of a intro out side which then moves to the inside ware the sex takes place.
Thats the basic set up. Im going to shoot the 24p. But this whole 720 1080 thing is throwing me off. I edit with Final Cut. And they say shoot the 720 and bump it in post. It shure was kind off retard proff using the crapy sonny to tape and forgeting about it. Theres the premis what to do ?

Ahhh you serious? you have it set ahahah

I guess since your short on time not to bother learning manual adjustments and leave it on auto, but still focus, white balanmce etc.
But people can easily disagree with that

Depending on what card size your shooting on and time i would then decide 1080 or 720... Probs best to shoot 720/24p but

Good luck?

Yea those gimicks I think I can stumble threw. Its the 720 1080 that kind off thing im stressing about. The other stuff the other cameras basicley have. Yes this does have way more but white ballence, Iris, and that stuff I can figure out. Its the super teck stuff like native and the whole true 1080 and stuff like that Im lost on

Ok Evans I think it might have confused me more I dont know. I think what there saying is shoot 1080 I if you can. So my question is this I have a 32 gig card. If I shoot at 1080 24 p how long will the card get me. I normely shoot about 75 mins woth of footage for a scene. I have some one that can feed the cards into the computer but I dont have that much money ware I can get 5 to 8 of the dam things. I have the budget to get 1 32 gig and 1 16 gig. Or 3 16 gig. At 1080 I how much time will i get. I repeated my self sorry

here's what you want to hear.

shoot 720/24pn. don't bother uprezzing in post. no point. it will look amazing at this resolution on blu-ray, the web, standard def dvd, whatever.

you will get 42 minutes from a 16gb card. double that from a 32gb card.

it takes 8-12 minutes to dump a 16gb card onto a laptop so 2 cards are fine as long as someone is dumping while you keep shooting.

in fcp set your sequence to dvcpro hd 720p/23.98

that is how most people shoot on an hvx. it's the best way to go.

as far as white bal., focus, iris, etc. , you should be able to figure this stuff out if you know the fx1 or any pro cam for that matter.

have fun.

Cheez thank you very much that was very help full. If I could aske one last question if the camera can do 1080 why dont we do that. Why does evrey body say the 720 is fine. I dont reley understand that. If we can do it and we payed 5 plus dimes for the camera. Then another 2 dimes for cards 7 total. Why dont we do it at 1080. You seem to be able to explain stuff simple that a retard like me can understand. Thank you

well what are you doing with it? projecting onto a 40' screen? then go ahead and shoot 1080. but if the biggest screen it will see is a 50" HD tv, shoot 720. the difference between 720 and 1080 is usually nothing on a screen this size.

the advantages to shooting 720pn...

variable frame rates
no pulldown removal to deal with in post (shoots 24fps. that's it)
easier on your system to edit
getting the most out of your p2 and disk space

i'm sure there are more reasons but i'm sleepy right now...

keep in mind that the varicam is only a 720p camera using the same codec as the hvx. don't be too obsessed with pixels...

I got ya I still got some questions but it is late go to bed. But yea basicley it will never be shown on a movie screen so its stricley going to Blu ray DVD. and being seen on what ever HD tv's people have at home. My boss has a 50 inch or so TV thats true 1080. So his thing is he wants to see these movies on his TV in his office and see the big 1080 thing. Cause most porn companies dont reley give a crap and only the higher end ones do stuff like this on selective projects. Were going to shoot evrey movie we do regardless of the budget in HD Blue Ray bla bla bla. So he wants to see the best. In are world the AVE budget is around 15 dimes. The biger ones from Wickeds and Vivids are around 50 to 100. Anything more are inflated BS. And they only do a couple of these a year. Most of there stuff is done on the Sonys F1 or F7 or the new one thats supose to be close to the HVX. SO we are doing evreything with HVX and all the bells and whistels. So hopefuly that explains evreything a little bit. I try to do artsey crap with the stuff. If not Ill go crazy. Once the action starts you cant reley do a lot of coller changing and matrix coller stuff. But I try to be creative with the shots and use geto style rigs rather its shots on a wheel chair or other tricks like that. And the lead up stuff Ill to coller stuff and old film looks and bleach effects. So thats why I got the HVX's cause the way I shoot it is porn but you can tell when you watch them that the person who made them actuley looks at movies and trys to do stuff thats in are moden cinema thats out there today and old. What ever Ive rambled on enough. Thanks By

For a good and quick explanation of the whole 1080/720 thing, read these articles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080i
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/720p

They'll help you get a good grasp of the whole HD thing. And if you're savvy (which I'm guessing you're not based on your spelling and grammar), try reading this article as well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_television

If you can actually read that slowly and process it, you'll understand HD pretty well.

This is also an excellent article on 720p vs. 1080p.

Good luck!

WRONG.
When shooting in off frame rates the camera does not record audio.
720 24pn or 30pn both record audio.

So does this mean that if I set my own custom frame rate (like for over/under cranking) I'll only get video, and not audio? I guess I'll need to make sure to have an external audio recorder available for those times then...

well if you are shooting at a higher rate for slow motion the audio wouldn't match anyway when played back. that is unless you slowed down the audio as well. you would maybe do this for effect but not for everyday use. that is the reason audio isn't recorded. i kinda wish it would anyway just to make syncing easier but not a big deal really. i can't see you doing much slow motion if it's hardcore stuff. may be a nice effect for a soft core skinemax type thing...

lol...shoot all your hard core stuff overcranked at 60fps then just put some yo yo ma under it in post. then you can call it an art film.

I'm going to add a question to this conversation if I may. I love the advantages of shooting 720/24pn, it's what makes this camera rock! But if I had some small hope that maybe my film would be transfered to 35mm film in the future, should I forget all those benefits and shoot 1080/24pa instead? Would a distributor be happy with using a 720p movie for distributing or would they say 'ohh, it's only 720 . . .eh?' and drop the deal.

To the OP

Post up your pix or some frame grabs after the shoot and we will see how well you got on . We will be pleased to offer our considered advice.

if the movie looks like it will make money, it shouldn't matter. open water - shot on dv. november - dvx100, won best cinemtography at sundance. lots of stuff shot with the varicam - 720p dvcpro hd.

the hvx "1080" is actually 1440x960. not that much bigger than 720p
