Brevis35 reviewed in DV magazine..

Here's an official reprint of the article posted in June 2008's DV magazine on the Brevis35. This was an older REV2 unit, on our older (non-Proteus) rails system, but it's worth a read. We're only permitted to share it from our site, as per the reprint agreement, so I aplogize for not linking directly.

Unfortunately we've been moving much faster in terms of development than the schedules and timelines set by most magazines. You're right though, we'll need to get the MP.1 and Proteus updates in there :-)

I just LIKED the proteus when Dennis first showed it to me.

After using it on many shoots, I LOVE the proteus rails.

This topics and the person who started it is like advertising.
Barry, am I right?

i'm glad dennis posted it. yeah, it's his company, but i'm planning to buy the brevis and want to read any and everything i can about it before i make that leap.

Advertising? It's a good review. Shows what works and doesn't and brings up an issue that all adaptors face, wide angle clarilty balanced against vignetting. Where the review falls short for me is I'd like to see a review by someone who used it on a production that lasted more than a week. That's where things like build, dust and overall usability make a break a product.

Many test environment reviews while useful to an extent often fail to show how something performs in the real world. How many of you bought something based on great early reviews only to be burned by a long term issue (ie. Macbooks dropping internet signals or Ipod battery failures).

Anyway, I hope someone reports on the Brevis under production conditions.

Hey Tim,
We will be using it on a feature starting August 10th for 6 weeks and will definitely be writing something up on the experience.

I have had a Brevis for a year now and have used it for everything. I love it to death and it has held up really well. I don't smash my equipment around, but I don't baby it either. Dust has never been an issue and wide angle softness/vignetting has never been a problem for me even with really cheap glass. It would be unacceptable to some people here though, lucky I am not one of them, and you know what? None of my viewers has ever said one word about it.

I am using the Brevis on a feature right now that will wrap late July. I have no doubts in the unit.

The nice thing about the FreshDV crew is that they don't pull any punches. That said, the EX1 would have been my last choice for a camera to review our system with for two reasons:

1. The bare camera at anything less than f8 is soft at the edges.
2. When zoomed in, the camera gets progressively worse at the edges.

Now if a follow up review is done with the EX1 fix optics that we've been laboring over, it will look a lot different than this one with respect to edge to edge sharpness at differing zoom levels. The best cam we've tested so far in terms of edge to edge sharpness with the MP.1 flip at f4 is without question the XH-A1. That's what we use these days to test lenses on the Brevis due to it's very nice behavior with our flip optics.
