15mm rods. Anyone now a good supplier?

carbon steel is going to be prone to rust and other oxidation issues. its probably not a great idea for a long term solution unless you want to have to oil your rods all the time.

Try Zacuto. They have everything from 1 inch and up. You can customize your setup to the exact length using that aspect. They all screw together to make your setup adjustable. I.E. Longer setup from M2 or Brevis. Shorter setup for camera and mattebox only.

Ok, this overpriced rod thing has been bugging me for a while so I finally broke down and ordered a massive order from a metal supply company. They're aluminum rods, 15mm OD with a 2mm wall. They sent me a small sample and it works perfectly with my gear. There's plenty to experiment with in making my own DIY little setup. Of course I also have a ton of extra material. If anyone's interested in acquiring some cheap 15mm rods for their own setups I'd be glad to help out. How does 20$ for a 12" pair sound?

chuck it's not 25.4mm... it's 15mm rods in diameter but Zacuto sells extensions that screw-connect together from lengths of 1 inch and up

They have connectors that you can build a custom rig, kinda like an erector set.

Very cool. Fairly expensive.

yeah the Zacuto Stuff is Bulletproof. I work with a place that has the whole setup. You can customize for nearly anything. Downside is you have to trade your firstborn. "A fair trade" some say. Here's Zacuto setup custom for the LEX

I got some stainless steel 15mm tube from Metric Metals

Still pricey. 48" was $80. needs to be polished too. It has 2.5 mm wall thickness which seemed stiff enough, but we'll see. I haven't set them up yet.

I really can't stress the Zacuto rods. I love em! Especially if you need a very specific length for your rig.

However, on the more cost effective side, if you want just rods, I've heard good thigns about Cinevate's solid carbon fibre rods.

I have some zacuto stuff, and it is great, very solid etc etc, but if its just simple rods you are after, I found a company in the US called RafCamera that do 15mm rods at a very reasonable price. They are rolled and welded stainless steel, chrome plated. very light weight, but very ridged, and very cheap. Two 10inch rods was $30. I mount the SGpro, follow focus, mattebox etc and they are fine. Since they are stainless they wont rust.

Excellent 15 mm Carbon Fiber lens support or iris rods or rails

Excellent 15 mm Carbon Fiber lens support or iris rods or rails

I can personally vouch for the Easom Aerospace Carbon fiber support rails. They are super super rigid, and look awesome. He has some on ebay now. They are 18 inches by 15 mm and they are $80 per set. His DOF adapter is quite a piece of work as well. I think his adapter gains light instead of loosing light. iris rods? ..well theres this little company called "Rowe Cine" thats owned by a DVX user here.. i think its that Neil Rowe guy. ..anyway im pretty sure that they now sell stock and custom carbon fiber and stainless rod sets at good pricing. ..i also heard he can shoot red hot lasers out of his eyes like 70 feet on a cloudless day, but ..ive only seen him do it like 30 feet so im not too sure how true it is about the 70. ...the link in my sig should answer any rod questions though.

Mcmaster-Carr has close to 15mm 12" stainless steel rods.

Schedule 40 is $9, and schedule 80 is $39.

I'm not sure what the structureal difference is, anybody know?

I do not recommend them. They are too thin (13.5mm instead of 15mm), very heavy and very crudely made (rough surface, not polished, and have sharp edges where they were cut). I just waisted $40 on them.

Hello!

Can anyone recommend a good UK supplier of "roll-your-own" 15mm rods (steel, aluminium or carbon fibre)? I too am not too happy about spending £100 on some small tubes of metal. I'm not too worried about the rods being heavy because I'm looking to build a shoulder-mount rig for my GH1 and my theory is that I need to add as much weight as possible to the GH1 to make it feel more like a pig-heavy digibeta camera.

"I was wondering if anyone new a supplier for 15 mm support rods. It just seems that $100.00 is a bit pricey fro something so simple and inxepesive a a little aluminum or stainless steel. Any thought would be appreciated?"

It's not as easy as it sounds, it's actually pretty hard, especially when getting into longer rods.

we sell them @ rowecine.com just click link on my sig. weve only got a few pairs left. i think two 18" pairs and one 24" pair before restock. if you want to get eiter just send me a pm and ill shoot you a good price for them before we restock.

So the 24" stainless are $55 US or $70 International? Does that mean chipping is included? How much for the 24" CF? I'm in Canada but have a US address. Also, I heard the cavision or Cinevate are not true 15mm. Are these? IOW, do they fit standard mounts?
