schleppin' productions

I beg to differ. The movie looks dramatically better coming from uncompressed HDV. It's 1920x1440. It's not HiDef but it's 2K. I think that's what makes the difference. Otherwise, yes, I've digitized 35mm movies too and they look fine in 720x480 SD format; but now we have HDV and the uprez potential to 2k and nobody is talking about it. Why? There is something here. I can see the difference and I will show the difference. I'm almost done with my feature. The quality far surpasses SD generated from SD digital cameras shooting in 720x480.

lol yea your missing the point. of course something shot on standard isnt going to look as good as hd converted to standard. all this uncompressed stuff your doing is going to look the same as mpeg2 out with the hd converted to sd. which is what we been telling you. just becuase you burned an hd file to a dvd and watch it in a dvd player doesnt mean its still in the native hd format. its just converted to sd 720x480. your goin way out of your way to do something that is going to be the same quality if that

No, I understand. It is SD, but it's the best you can get in SD. There is a difference between one SD and another SD. As they say, "garbage in garbage out." But if you put in uncompressed 1920x1440, you, even though it comes out 720x480, will end up with better quality. There's more detail and better colors. You are going from 4:2:2.

Now, I don't know a lot about technical stuff, I'll be honest with you, but I know what I see. I see it in my new DVD. It's significantly better than going straight to mpeg2 from HDV in the timeline and a QT movie in "current settings". I don't know why...

i just wanted to ask what you ment when you said in your last post that allowing dvd studio pro to encode your dvd is just plain bad. isnt that what dvd studio pro its made for? are you saying that you should always use compressor to encode and not dvd studio pro? just wonderin becuz i will be getting to this point soon in my project and im just a bit confused by what you said. are you saying that dvd studio pro isnt a good program?

thx

sorry but, did you seriously make that into a feature?

the quality doesn't look to professional at all. I couldn't see this getting distribution to be honest.

Well, the encoding for the web isn't good. At least the free services like youtube that I use a lot aren't giving me better results.

Loki gave me some good tips about how to improve the quality of the trailers I'm posting; but I haven't had the time to post any new trailers yet.

Of course, I'd like to improve the trailer as a whole, because I feel that the movie is better than what the trailer shows.

I wish I could get some help on what to do with the trailer.

If however you don't like the overall look or feel of the trailer then all I can say is that I respect your opinion and move on. I don't do short films. It's not my metier :-) So for better or worse the movie is feature length.

As for distribution, I intend to distribute this movie myself -- if I don't get a major studio pick-up. LOL

Distribution is easier today because of the Internet and the DVD market. It's possible to sell no budget features as DVDs and recover the production budget.

That's the advantage of digital production. When there is no financing, digital makes perfect sense. If I have more than $25,000, I'll always shoot my features in 35mm.

hey filmman, do you have you tube uploader? you know that allows you to upload up to 1gb file instead of just the normal 100mb file. that should allow your trailer to look awesome on you tube.

I went through the movie and found a way to lighten some night scenes that were extremely dark, lit by lasers and spotlights. I used the mid-range filter setting in the 3-Way-Color-Corrector in FCP in combination with "Screen" in "Composite". Today I'll make a DVD and watch the whole movie again on my TV monitor.

Wish me luck ... getting ready for a festival. I don't know which one...

DVD Studio Pro is a great program. But you don't have many options for encoding to MPEG-2 within the program.

Encode your media to MPEG-2 via Compressor, you have many more options available to you.

I should re-phrase.. it isn't 'bad' perse, but with this way of doing things, you'll need to export your entire sequence to a quicktime movie of the original format. When you could just send your sequence from FCP directly to Compressor and create the MPEG-2 file you need. Bypassing that extra step.

You just have more flexibility going with Compressor than using DVD SP's built in encoder. Compressor is only for encoding.. so why not use it?

New DVD today! I'm excited about seeing the second rough cut of my movie. I hope this one is the one that I will release and send to festivals. The encoding is being done via DVD SP from an uncompressed QT movie. This is my way of doing all HDV projects from now on. I have a feeling this is a major breakthrough for encoding mpeg2. Thanks for your help in steering me to this major discovery :-)

Yeah! Finally a great looking encode. The new sequence I added yesterday worked well. I like the feel of the whole movie now. It's ready for the festivals In My Not So Humble Opinion (IMNSHO).

Today I pulled about 20 stills from my movie. I de-interlaced them and up-rezed them. They will serve as the elements for a DVD box artwork. Maybe tomorrow I'll post some artwork for the movie.

filmman, is 24pa footage interlaced? i thought it wasnt interlaced. if it is do i need to deinterlace my footage?

You're right, it isnt; but I didn't shoot progressive, I shot HDV 1080i 60i.

And I edited in HDV native. Then I exported uncompressed 8bit and brought the .mov into DVD SP.

To me this is much better for digital projection and DVD production.

If I want 24 fps, I'll shoot 35mm film with my own Arriflex camera :-)

24p is never interlaced. The 'P' standing for progressive.

the only interlaced frames in 24PA are the mixed frames created to conform it to the 60i data stream.

But this is a none issue if you capture using (for instance) the preset in FCP with advanced Pull down removal.

de-interlacing progressive footage is a waste of time. What you need to do if you captured incorrectly is a pulldown removal... or a reverse Telecine

I finally went a bought a new hard drive from Fry's -- a 1000 Gig hard drive -- Maxtor (made by Seagate in China).

I was amazed how easy it was to install. Now I have room to do uncompressed exports! A little later I'll post a art work I did last yesterday. I don't know if it's strong enough as my main poster art work, but we'll see ...
