Can I play MiniDV content shot on Sony VX200 on HVX200???

Hi All,

I used to own a SOny VX2000 and was thinking about about the HVX200. I have so much old footage on MiniDV tapes and wanted to make sure I can still REUSE the material so I dont have to rent a deck to convert the tapes.

Also, how is the workflow different with working with P2 card - specifically digitizing wise - if I understand correctly I dont need to digitize the material as it is already digital - but does that mean that I can use ANY laptop to edit without HARDWARE ACCELERATION (Aja, Decklink card using SDI input etc.) ??

If I don't have to use any NLE card, does that mean I can watch HD recorded material and edit it on my laptop without jittering/frame dropouts etc? If I can do that that I guess I am saving a lot of $$$ by NOT buying an NLE card right???

Also, can I control and acquire footage via the FireWire connection to the camera or do I use the P2 card and insert it directly into my laptop?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

The answers to pretty much all questions are yes.

-The HVX will play standard Mini-DV tapes made in your VX2000 or any other SD Mini-DV camcorder. It will not play HDV Hi Def tapes.

-A laptop, Mac or PC, can ingest the P2 footage diredtly as long as it has a PCMCIA Cardbus slot. Newer computers don't, and need adapters like the Duel for that. A G4 Powerbook of one of the faster varieties will do just fine for that purpose and plenty are available used.

-No NLE card is necessary. NLE software will be of course, and there are good choices on both platforms. For the Mac it's pretty much all about Final Cut.

-My Powerbook G4 1.67 plays back my DVCPROHD footage like a champ.

-You can record HD directly to NLEs like FCP via firewire. No P2 card needed.

Also,

Do you know if the Jvc Hd110u can play MiniDV footage from the Sony Vx2000?

And one last question, I was wondering if the HVX and/or HD110u can record true 1080p (progressive) - I think I saw somehwere that they actually record 1080i (interlaced) ..???

Best,
Steve

Regarding the MiniDV tapes in the HVX, You may have trouble with LP tapes, since there is no real standard for it. SP should work provided you don't have PAL vs. NTSC mismatch.

The HVX does record true 1080p, but it embeds it in an interlaced stream. When the two fields are displayed or edited, you will see a true progressive image with no temporal offset.

Do u know if the JVC hd110u does real 1080p?
