Another DIY 35mm spinning adapter.

I built my first 35mm adapter with those plans- its ghetto but it works- extremely grainy though- nice if you want that "Spinning CD 35mm adapter" look.

This is one of the first diy design tutorials to hit the market. Unfortunately back in the day there weren't any plans to just follow, it was all about tinkering. :)

Do you think it's worth building your own adapter at this stage in the game. I am trying some various things on the dirt cheap. My first one was a beer can, lens cap and an old binder. I currently revised that to PVC pipe, lens cap and a sanded cd case. I have some macro lens tubes on the way as well as a cheap ebay achromat, so I might give daniels plans a try im not sure, but it seems that if I start to spend a few hundred bucks I am better off buying one of the big boys adapters. There is just something satisfying about any DIY project and the fact is, Letus, cinevate, SG they were all DIY at one point, so there is a chance.

Depends on what kind of results your looking for.

If your looking for professional results, its not practical to try and do it on your own. Companies that market such products have put forth a tremendous amount of investment of time and money to locate the materials and get the designs right. You would save a lot of money by just forking over the grand or so they ask for.

I disagree with the statement above. Most of these adapters R&D were right here on the boards. They just have the financing to get their product CNCD. Reason why they charge as much as an used car. I could point you out to 3 boards alone that were DIY and have results that almost surpass these adapters at 1/3 of the cost they charge. But hey, you might not like building stuff so you're better off buying one. I said to you in an earlier post, if you wait to the end of the month, I'll have a solid tutorial and a fantastic looking picture to go with the adapter.

So here's my question Rich. If say Dennis has his optical engineer create several different spins on a gg design to get the right one he does'nt have to pay for that. The company he's working with just gives this to him? You keep saying this on every board and it sounds like sour grapes to me. I think the commerical designs are beyond microscope glass and syringes at this point. If you have a better or equal design cool but damn to keep counting other peoples money and where its been spent because of how you're doing things is kind of wack.

If he's on their payroll, sure why wouldn't he pay him? I'd hate to see a guy doing work for a company and not getting paid for it.

I'm obviously not zerth's financial adviser, and he did ask a simple question. I gave him "my" answer. Please, feel free to point out "every board" where I say the same thing. Hell, I might need to contact the site admins because somebody phished my account.

Read simple print cinebuddy "most" is the key word. If the adapter companies dropped a fortune doing R&D, well good for them. I didn't. Even better for me, cause I didn't spend what they did, building a one.

If it were easy to build an HVX, then I'd think it'd be pointless to buy one of those as well.

I have built adapters myself, and spent hundreds of hours on research and hundreds of dollars buying materials. Sure you can do it, obviously others have. But unless you really know what your doing, building your own cheap is a gamble at best.

I don't mean to discourage anybody. If your doing this for a hobby, a challenge, you can't lose. If your doing it to save money, I would not recommend it.

You could use a walmart shopping bag and a lens cap to put together a 35mm adapter.... But a professional 35mm adapter needs to have much more than the shallow DOF.
  • Sharp image
  • Correct Bokeh
  • Low as possible light loss. < 1 stop
  • No hot spot
  • No grain / hot spot - up to f/22
This is what Cinevate and SGpro invest so much into. Both are constantly tweaking and revising the designs. Trying to make them better products, and its taken them years to get this far.

Getting the same results without a major investment is unlikley.

Sorry bro, you just based Naylor for whining in a different thread, and then you steadily decry the fact that these guys do spend money for R&D. Hell if they did not and used some universally ready formula, then each adapter should look the same. If your design is as good or better, then you should have sold it commercially...i'd buy one as I don't have any brand loyalty. I'm not knocking your design skills at all, I just think its patently false that these things don't cost money to design. That said I think once their rolling, the cost is easily recoupable. Me I have no build skills, tried to build a few and ehh...so I admire those who can do it.

Hostility. I actually got some decent results the other day with some random stuff I had laying around the house. I have some custom gg and I am going to giver a go. Ill post up some **** as it happens. I am not trying to compete with anyone, just want to see if I can do it.

My DIY got me some great results, and while I didn't have the money for a professional adapter, it more than made do. I'm in the middle of editing a short I did with it that I'm planning to submit to festivals this fall, and when I burned a DVD of it and watched it for sort of a "test screening" for myself and my filming partner, it looked really good.

Honestly, I think it's worth it. If anything just for the experience, gained knowledge, and if and when you do obtain one of the professional adapters, maybe you'll appreciate it just that much more.

Also, after having made one (well 2, 1 good one), I'm also much LESS impressed by the professionals, lol, building something really humbles your perception of the world around you. (this is of course not to say I don't love my LEX, I do. It's freaking awesome. But still... )

cinebuddy, at this point, it really doesn't matter. adapter companies are going to sell them anyway. i'm not rosa parks, my voice isn't going to make a difference. all the adapters are based off of one formula, just added ingredients for their own distinct taste, that's why they all don't look the same. it all comes down to their GG and Achromat. The rest is 1and1.

you know, even if my so called design was better, i still don't care to sell it commercially. i'm much rather go out of my way to help those who want an adapter. it makes more sense, because these all came from "DIY".

just wait, end of this month, i'll have a video with extensive detail on how to build one. i have no desire to make a buck on something i didn't invent.

and for the record, naylor whines about everything. i wine about the cost of an adapter vs making one of your own..he should deserve a thread for his complaints. might make the world a better place.

thanks bra,

Whatever cuz, just because you cry about one thing does not make it any less annoying or you any less of a cry baby. And to even mention Ms. Parks c'mon cuzzo you've gone to a next level of thread retardation. Like I said if your design is so fly fine make'em/sell'em take pictures of 'em who gives a flying fk, just quit bitchin about how much something costs. No one has to own a 35mm adapter unlike gas...now that's something we could all ***** about...but 35mm adpaters?

cinebuddy, i digress. it seems when i say something about a 35mm adapters price you get all bent out of shape. you make it sound like it's your mom i ***** at...tell you what, seeing how you're on the brink of breaking down, i'll take a break from debating the issue for a while...just so you can recover and all and can get back to calling me a retard and a cry baby. sorry man, i had no idea this would be so hard on you...my apologies..."cuzzo"

You do that dunny, find something new to cry about and we'll all rejoice in not hearing you lament on not getting in on the commercial side of the adapter revolution. Be easy dun dun. Lol and as far as my mom's she would've smacked ya' cryin ass cause nobody likes a cry baby or a snitch.

"cause nobody likes a cry baby or a snitch" trademark that.

That last part was almost as memorable as "nobody puts baby in a corner"

I'm all for DIY. I got the Red Rock DIY guide when it first came out and also am putting together one based on Daniel's GG holders. I also own and Go35 and a Brevis.

While I can't speak for the people out there making and selling commercial adapters, I know I've spent hundreds on DIY. I can only imagine what these companies has spent on developing and building these adapters not to mention the marketing and everything else involved in running a business.

That being said would you prefer we go back a few years where there were no other choices other than the P+S Mini for $10,000+ dollars? I have a hard time saying anything when these guys are offering quite a variety of choices for a 1/10 of price of the P+S.

Rich is missing my point. I'm not saying he can't make a diy with beautiful bokeh and the whole nine. I just don't get his beef with the pricing. I was there for the Agus revolution just like him. Dan used the off the shelf Beattie screen and custom machining for the MPIC. I watched Wayne work with real glass, I followed Dennis' work with the early cinefuse ground glass. I liked the RR but there wait time was ridiculous. I had the original letus with the syringe and microscope glass, not to mention the blackhole light loss of the original flip. Did the prices go up? Yep, as has the price of everything. I just noticed how much higher boltdepot.com is since my last purchase a year ago. But we are also paying a premium for flip options as well. I don't particularly want to flip my monitor, my camera, or my footage upon ingesting into my nle.
