Moments when you realize you're a born filmmaker

I was talking to a friend on my cellphone earlier. Out of the blue my battery died and I had to get my charger. The unfortunate thing is the nearest outlet in my room is dead right now. So I ran over to my gear closet, grabbed a stinger, plugged it in the far outlet, and ran the line to my phone.

What's your tale?

Saw a movie with some friends a week or so back and afterwards one was like "I really like that one scene." And I said "No, it was terrible, the dialogue was so canned and cookie-cutter." And he just gave me a strange look.

When your mom reflects that your delivery was hell: you were easy enough, but the bolex you were hugging was just hell...

When I'm making love to my wife and start thinking about how the new move I just did would be great in a movie love scene :-)

How about when you give away WAAAAAAY too much information on an online forum. Oh wait, I guess that doesn't really work for this thread.

Yeah, I really could have done without that knowledge.

As for me, I'd have to say most of the time someone tells me a funny story, my first thought is, "That HAS to be in a film I do."

Well I can't enjoy cinema anymore. All I do is analyze the lighting and camera movement. Only VERY good movies can get me lost enough to stop thinking about how they made it.

As for TV, just forget it.

As to answer the thread... when I find C-47's in my washer machine... or how everyone mistakes my lens cloth in my pocket for a handkerchief.... when people stop me to tell me there is something stuck on my pants and its a magazine ID strip from a can of film. :O

The only reason my pants sag is because theres tapes, battaries and filter cases in them. That instead of posers and sports gear (with the exception of mt bike stuff and my ski gear) on my walls and on my floor in my room theres tapes, tripods, a dolly (NOT the kind that you tear its head off when your mad), a half finished cablecam and jib and XLR cables. That when you concider what your first care is going to be you first say "hmm, so lets see how I'm going to fit my gear in this...". That I have an actaul functioning slate in my room. That I still use a CRT monitor (its my secondarry one and I want to get rid of it :-P). That I spend WAY more money on film gear then clothes and "accessories" (damn teenagers). That I dont have a girlfriend simply because a girl would subtract from my film time and money (or maybe its cause fort bragg isnt exactly full of my type...). When someone asks me what kind of camera I have I have to stop myself from actually telling them "its a DVX100b" because they wont know, and then when they ask what size it is I say ts ha- its big, I can rest it on my shoulder (I can to, even wihtout a shoulder brace). When a girl asks "so you like to make moveies huh? so are you like a director?" i instinctively say "nah, I'm a director of photography" instead of doing what most people my age would and start flirting with said girl. When I do go on a date to the movies, I cant stop analyzing shots and pointing out all the mistakes and "i-could-have-done-betters" under my breath... hey maybe THATS why I havent had a ladie friend for so long... hmm....

Sorry guys, but there's nothing about being a "born film-maker" here. All these things merely demonstrate that you have a current interest film making.

I don't know if I'm a "born filmmaker" but I enjoy this stuff terribly much. :)

Moment... moments...

Well,.. I saw E.T. when I was a kid.

That's most probably when I got it but I struggled for maybe two decades more,.. trying to see if anything can be done about it.

Umm well,.. nothing helped.

Then I finally went to the doctor and he said:

"I'm sorry... but it appears that you have filmmaking,...

(beat)

...I can prescribe you something for the pain, but... that's about everything I can do for you...

(beat)

I'm... I'm really sorry..."

Now I fully realize my situation but I'm not ashamed of anything.

We're human too!

When I was in school one of our professors warned us that, if we decided to get into production, we'd never be able to watch and enjoy a movie or tv show the same way again, ever.

At least he turned out to have been right, about something.

Of course. That's what they said on the first day of law school, too, and they were right. I suspect it's common to many professions.
