HPX500 Stills and compressed/DVCPROHD video

nice stuff there man, great looking shots.

Seems like one hell of a camera. How is the depth of field of the larger sensor? Still worth getting an adapter?

That kind of DOF is enough for me. I bought an adapter and I've found myself trying to stray away from the overuse of the extreme DOF. That lens on the HPX is better than I thought. Great stuff, thanks for sharing :)

Thanks everyone, I was personally very lucky to have had some of the best weather and lighting conditions on my testing days so that allowed this camera and incredible lens to shine.

I'll say that I'm quite pleased with the depth of field. I too have been getting a little tired of seeing Redrock stuff with too much depth of field. I think it's a mix of most shooters not being used to having this new toy called depth that they feel they need need it in every shot. I supposed the stop and a half the adapters eat also usually means you've got to keep the lens wide open.

Part of the reason I went with this lens was to get away from those adapters (have you ever had to have a shot looking into a light source and gotten those multiplexing layers of light refleciton all over your image? I hate being limited like that! But yes indeed, I do feel that this camera doesn't necessarily require the DOF adapter. Although, the lower end zooms that they push on you with the packages do breath quite heavily which made me decide to dive in with a more expensive lens.

Besides, the Pro35 is $25,000... for that price you might as well just get some solid glass and keep your sharp image resolution.

I actually do have my video up at 720P, although I didn't use any compression so it's native DVCPROHD and 777mb.

But for those who have the time to download it,

Nick,

Thanks for posting this in 720p.

But I can not get the file to play!

I am on PC and the quicktime player says it needs another component installed, then just plays the audio.

When I input the file into Edius, same thing, just audio.

Do you know what I need to play the file?

Other quicktime clips have played fine for me at 720p and 1080p.

Thanks

I would really like to see your footage in 720p as I am trying to decide on this camera!

Nick -

Thanks for posting the footage. Looks great! I just mailed my check for an HPX, unfortunately I'll have to wait on the HD lens (have a Fuji SD I'll use temporarily). That lens really perks up the HVX.

Ah shoot... one of the reasons I posted in HD was so people could see some uncompressed footage from the HPX500... when I was considering buying it I couldn't find anything online!

Anyone have good suggestions for HD compression in Final cut? The prores 4:2:2 codec is n't any better as far as file size right? What's a good one for online, and I'll try to have it compressed and up in the next couple days.

Thanks for your efforts Nick!

Like you said, some full resolution material is worth a lot when comparing cameras.

BTW, would you tell us how much your camera and lens cost?

I agree, that lens does look very sharp.

I got everything from B&H, Camera body after Panasonic's rebate was $8,000. The lens was $30K. That kind of glass may be out of reach for many, but I had the choice to go with either average glass and an HPX2000, or this glass and the HPX500. I think I made the right choice, as the images show that with good glass the HPX can be downright amazing... certainly good enough for low budget indie features. Once this glass pays itself off, it will eventually pay for the upgrade to the 2700 or 3700 when that time comes... and hey, the lens will still be good!

-Nick!

Is it possible to download the DVCPROHD codec from quicktime? Do you have to have final cut to get it? I think it's worth looking into, probably cheap enough to make it worth getting

Nick,

Can you render out a high bitrate version to a distributable form of quicktime?

Or maybe H.264?

Your correct that the investment in great glass has helped the camera be its best.

Smart man, the lens will ALWAYS be good. Which one was it?

Also, Vimeo is probably the best cross-platform web viewing medium going right now.
