Wow didn't know that, it's been a while. :) Well then I'd say maybe 200 - 300 posts,

Some level of post-count requirement will help weed out the ones who are cruising by looking for easy pickings but going to 200 or 300 will show extreme diminishing returns, IMO. The reality is that post count doesn't guarantee anything. I participated on a forum where somebody with THOUSANDS of posts eventually scammed a bunch of people and then completely disappeared. Was a great member of the community prior to that.

Now that I think about it, Paypal is suppose to refund your money in full and should deal with the claim. I'm sure you've asked already, but I'd become a thorn in their a$$ and call every day 2 - 4 times.

Good luck to you

Chris

I've had that experience before. I bought something online and only received an empty case. Fortunately, it was resolved, and I was sent everything I ordered. Hopefully yours gets resolved quickly, and at least people know not to buy from him now.

Sucks! maybe there should be like a ranking system where if someone sells something and it goes smooth they get a rating of some sort ala ebay. That way people would know what they're getting into before making a purchase.

People can always start using a site like Heatware. People selling and buying computer parts have been using it forever.

Wow....I was all set to buy a 32gb card from this dude a month or two ago, and he dropped out of the deal saying he had just sold it to someone else!

Also weighing the package with an empty p2 case, and with a card seems like a great way to prove you're case. Can you bring someone to small claims court if you arent a resident of their state?

I know right!? I just got lucky...I read that thread awhile back where someone bought a card from him, and after payment could not get him to respond to an email etc....his card came in the mail anyway so I figured he was just bad with communication.

Thankfully I got two 16gb cards off a reputable DVXuser instead.

with how little the p2 card weighs, I doubt that will work, its probably within the error margin of the fedex scales. thats assuming the package was even weighed,

the guy was smart going through fedex, no mail fraud charges, usps may be slower, but they have their own police force to deal with stull like this.

I don't see how identity theft comes into play here. I'm talking about the seller's ID only being accessed by the admins. It would be stored in the database for purposes of disputes, along those lines.

Scanned photo ID is just asking for identity theft...

How is protecting people a penalty? Most purchases here here are around or over $1000. That's a lot of money to potentially lose. Not only that, if scammers start targeting this site that "few" could become quite a bit.

It would take two minutes or less for a seller to register. Plus, it would benefit the seller for future sales. I know I would feel much more confident making a purchase from a verified seller.

A new registration that effects everyone based upon the actions of one individual?
Please, let's not go there. 99% of the users here are decent people. No need to penalize everyone based upon the actions of one or a few.
Knowledge and awareness is the key, not new restrictions.
--Check to see how long the user has been around.
--Read their old posts to get a feel of where they are coming from.
--Contact by phone if possible.
--If things go fraudulent, get the authorities involved and get the word out.

Here's the bottom line. Truthfully 99% of the few instances we have had on this site could have been avoided with a little research. Not always, but most of the time folks should have at least gotten enough red flags to feel uncomfortable about the seller.

That doesn't mean we don't care. This type of crap is one of my pet peeves, and it ticks me off to no end to see folks get taken advantage of. But, some research from the buyer could have saved a lot of these instances from ever happening.

If the marketplace does get worse and worse, you can bet that we'll do something... Maybe even just close it down altogether. But, I know folks don't want to see that, and I know a lot of folks don't want to see some kind of post minimum, etc. Even so, in this case a post minimum or join date would not have stopped gonzoish as he's been around a little while.

The marketplace is here for the benefit of the community at large. It's not an extension of eBay, although some people treat it that way. But, the site is pretty huge now and these types of things are bound to happen. You guys need to protect yourselves and look out for each other. The mods will gladly check i.p. addresses and look for potential red flags in the mod/admin cp's. That doesn't mean if they find nothing you are guaranteed to be safe, but there are several folks that could have been saved a couple thousand bucks a piece with the whole dvx fiasco had they taken the time to do that.

I'm not going to take the attitude of some folks here and just say "well, it's your fault, you should have known better", but like I said, that could save 99% of these cases from happening.

Vouch for sellers that you have bought from and think are legit. Pm folks about sellers that you have had shady dealings with. If you had shady dealings with gonzoish you could have pm'd a mod when you saw him putting his stuff up for sale and just passed alon your story. Now, if a potential seller pm's one of us, we are equipped with more information to help them make their decision.

Look. In lieu of a bunch of really restrictive rules, the point is be proactive and look out for one another if you want the marketplace to remain a valuable place for the community.

Later,
Jason

What we need, and I've said this before many times, is a feedback subforum to the marketplace where we can give each other +1/-1 like ebay.

Okay, my turn. First off: FedEx steals stuff all the time. We used to ship film prints through them and have reels taken constantly. Cases were ziptied, opened then re-tied closed. I suspect they do it because it makes it look like the wrongdoing was on the part of the shipper. We sent one print out, it was a six reeler in two three reel cans. One can made it, the other disappeared for a few days then re-surfaced with the reels missing and a bunch of wound steel cable in it's place.

As for Gonzoish, I bought a Magiqcam from him. I've got his phone number and been to his house. He seemed a nice enough guy and at least deserves the benefit of the doubt. I seriously doubt that any real scam-artist would allow strangers to come to his home if he were planning to start screwing people outta stuff later.

Of course I could be wrong, but my experience screams FedEx is probably the bad guy in this one.

no way dude, I have been shipping with ups and fedex for years and never heard of any package being opened, maybe back in the day but not recently
like I said, its better to just steal the whole package all together, not going though the drama of all this BS.

I think that on transactions of 500 dollars and above, everytime someone wants to sell something, they would have to just get approval from a mod by providing a home phone number where a moderator can call and verify that it really is that person selling whatever, with vonage we all know that all calls are free to usa canada and europe, the reason why I say a number is needed is because I had a situation
where I almost got scammed oncraigslist with a macpro but the dude made the mistake on calling me one time from his cellphone
and that was it, just using his cellphone I tracked him down, got the cops involded, it got to the point where he almost got arrested not only because of the mailfraud but his cellphone provider wanned to press charges against him for doing fradulent activities on their network
later the guy was begging me to just stop, by this time he had already refunded me my money and then some, damn right, I am not gonna let some ponk take advantage, not with whats available as far as technology to get into someone;s life just my .02

Okay, my turn. First off: FedEx steals stuff all the time.

I've sent thousands and thousands of dollars of stuff through FedEx as have millions of customers. I think it's quite a stretch to say that "FedEx steals stuff all the time"

aalleexx that would put a huge work load on the mods, this site sees hundreds of posts over 500 every week. something like 25000 members from all over the world. I'd rather see the market place shut down before we ask for that kind of protection from people who volunteer there time. in ther end it is buyer beware,

what i would suggest is only using cash in person, or paypal, they do have some buyer protections. beyond that try to look into your seller, and follow your gut.

as far as fexex, yes sometimes they have been known to do things like this, not the company, but with all the hands that each package goes through, you must admitt that it is possible that some fexex employees do take things out and repack them so the tracking number doesnt stop at them.

yeah you are right but even still with paypal, everyone now knows the loopholes of paypal, if you go into a discpute with someone, lets say for example you buy something outside of ebay, lets say you buy a lens here on the marketplace, you send the dude 100 bucks with paypal, all the dude has to do is send you a box with a rock inside and paypal will not do a damn thing because as long as paypal can track that you received a package the buyer is screwed, I have read this horror stories a million times and I know it sucks

ohh and regarding the fedex thing, no way, I have a couple of friends that work for fedex and they are the ones that told me that back in the day yeah they used to open the packages and remove whats inside but fedex is run by contractors mostly now, so what happens lets say a package gets lost of opened, well the fedex contractor has to pay for the insurance of that package, so it is very very unlikely that a fedex guy is going to lose or open a package knowing that its gonna end up coming out of their pocket

PLUS the fact that the dude has not said a damn thing in his defence since his last post selling the card, what does that tell you?
if I was selling something and I honestly sent the item but it got "stolen in transit" I will be defending my good name in the forum because
most likely you are gonna buy or sell something in the future, buy like they say, one mess up, messes it up for everyone

I've been an avid internet shopper for well over a decade and only two times have I had a shipping snafu with an insured carrier. Both were UPS. One package just disappeared from their system in transit. The other was a PS3 from Amazon and the box looked like it had been run over by an ATV, the PS3 had been yanked out but they left a remote control and a game inside. I couldn't believe they put it on the truck in that condition. I refused delivery which made it a lot easier to straighten out with UPS/Amazon. I suppose if you have a package you're not 100% confident about, make sure and open it with the carrier present and refuse it if something's missing.

Best of luck on this. Like Jason mentioned, due dilligence will weed out a lot of hinky situations.
