Hi,

I want to shoot for a 16:9 aspect ratio and I'm trying to match the dvx100b to the hvx200 in squeeze mode. What is the appropriate shooting format for me to use in the dvx100 -- letterbox? normal?

Thanks!

Albert

In a DVX100B you'd use "squeeze" mode. But just be aware it's going to be significantly softer than the HVX's squeeze mode.

Thanks for the reply, Barry, I appreciate it!!

I noticed that you mentioned that the DVX would be "significantly softer" -- but I'm wondering if the DVX is going to be significantly softer -- even if I'm shooting with the HVX200 in SD?

Yes. The HVX has native 16:9 chips and makes an extremely sharp picture in 16:9 SD mode. The DVX uses native 4:3 chips and makes for a softer 16:9 image.

Hey

I use an HVX in Squeeze and a DVX in letterbox. We have found it worked out best and gave us constantly the best image. We use the HVX for all our wides and masters and the DVX for CUs and when we need a lighter camera setup. Plus using squeeze in P2 mode is easier than shooting tape.

We just lay everything down in a 4:3 timeline in FCS2. Since it does multiformat it works well, minus a couple small bugs. Then just matte the whole thing to 1.78.

crap just gave away all our secrets.

Because Panasonic chose a very unfortunate name for its native 16:9 mode which leads to unnecessary confusion.

On a DVX, squeeze = electronic stretching.
On an HVX, squeeze = native 16:9.

The name is the same, the result is 16:9 footage, but the method used is very different.
