Blowing up a car for short film

So we came up with an outline for our next short, and it involves blowing up a car. I was curious if anyone has had experience going through the steps in producing something like this?

Our first thought is to speak with some fire departments about city/state policies regarding explosions/explosives for films, and use their answers to narrow our choices. Getting an old car shouldn't be a problem. We're hoping that the fire dept. may have a location where they practice, they they could maybe offer us to use– otherwise we would need to locate some property then contact the property owners, etc.

Any thoughts anyone can add? We will def shoot this with at least 5 cams in slow motion :-D

I once AD'd a movie with a car explosion. We contacted the local fire department (in the DC suburbs of Virginia) and they helped out immensely. They let us blow the car up in a government parking lot on a weekend, and they used it as a training exercise for new firefighters. (They even cleaned up) No matter how low budget it is (I am sure you know this) you really need a pro pyro guy to do it. He will do a few days prep work on the car, completely removing the gas tank for safety and sawing the roof so it flies off, etc. We used a pro pyro guy named Neil Ruddy who was very cool. He is out of NY and LA - http://www.stuntsnyc.com/ He also does squibs and loads of other stuff. Great guy.

Thanks... good to hear we're moving in the right direction. Finding a demo expert/pyro guy in the Detroit area will be next up.

I'll even let you use my car. But if the insurance company should show up asking questions, we know nooooothing!

I would contact your local film commission also. They should be able to help you with the ins and outs of how to pull something like that as far as what permits, insurances, which fire department is best suited for that kind of thing, etc. The lady here in San Diego has helped us out a lot with stuff like that.
