What's your day job?

definitely a good thread shawn. sometimes i start to think everyone but me on the boards are filmmakers by trade. good to know there are others busting their butts to make that a reality.

Camera operator for reality TV and feature docs by day. TV and Feature Development takes up every other working moment.

In the process of pitching a gameshow and a brand-new brick-and-mortar studio/dev company right now. Must sell game show.

I manage The Stella Adler Theaters in Hollywood...when I am not filming I am usually doing theater, directing, acting, writing, managing...lucky I guess that it's all related...feel blessed...

Master control operator for PBS.

In the beginning stages of getting my video production company off the ground.

One of these days, I'll be a professional actor... but in the meantime, I'm doing website programming... mainly actionscript for Flash... which I absolutely despise... but I guess it pays the bills till I'm able to no longer do this...

I've done just about every job that hurts and makes you sweat. I quit the workforce to be a stay at home dad like UGA. Then I saw how much work THAT was. Now I do freelance shooting, writing and editing.

Edit trailers and promos for really bad movies. Sometimes I edit features, documentaries and reality tv.

I go to high school, I'll be a senior after this summer. My "job" though is delivering pizza, and it pays pretty well. Gas is going up though so I'm going to have to convince my boss to increase our gas money. Right now we only get .75 cents a delivery. Besides that I just did my first paid video a week ago, so I'm also getting into the video business!

Used to do graphic/web design in Seattle, but left the cubicle five years ago to become a full time volunteer in Southeast Asia. Now I have my own charity org and spend time creating projects, updating our website, and spamming forums like this one.

Like a lot of you, I enjoy making movies but don't have the time or resources to do it on a regular basis.

Thanks for this thread. It's been interesting reading about what all of you do. Quite a mix of hobbyists and professionals here.

I sell Evinrude ETEC outboard motors and boats packages for a large marine company here in Melbourne AU. We are Australias largest marine spare parts store as well. Been there 5 years and been in the industry for 15 years but I'm slowly getting a break in the wedding video business, should start to see some rewards soon.

They're newer medium & large scale systems - racks of 'em. Primarily Solaris 10. (Im a long time UNIX guy). Does it still work? 9-track tape with 75GB disk drives in pull out drawers on bottom (heavy - huge)? Your electric bill has to be pretty high!!! What do you use it for?
Cool! I've been meaning to become more familiar with Solaris again, but haven't touched it in years. I do have an OpenSolaris disc sitting in front of me waiting to be used, though. :) How are you liking 10?

The AlphaServer still works! I actually haven't ran it in about a year, because yeah... the thing is a beast. It's got the tape drive and seven 4.0GB drives in pull out drawers on the right-side. And yes, it's HEAVY. I had to carry it up to my 2nd floor apartment and it was by far the most difficult thing I've ever had to carry. Harder than my 91 lb TV, so I'm guessing it's 100+ lbs. The size didn't make it any easier. I bought it for $50-100? I think some medical office was using it forever and finally decided to upgrade. I wanted to learn OpenVMS and this was the only thing I could find in my area that would run it cheaply. :) This was when I was studying for my security certification and wanted as much OS exposure as possible, so on a given day I was running: OpenVMS, HP-UX, Irix, Solaris, Linux, OpenBSD, Windows and Mac OS X. Ahh... the glory days. :D
