2012 and the end of the world

I haven't read all the replies so sorry if this is a repeat. The members of the ancient Mayan civilization were experts in the fields of math and astrology. Even with their primitive tools they were able to create a calendar that could predict each solar and lunar eclipse as well as other astrological happenings. In fact, most (of not all) of their formulas still apply today with startling acuracy. The calendar, however, ends on December 23, 2012 which leads some to believe that will be the end of the world.

I am not here to support or denegrate any theories, but that being said, with all of their monumental findings, it does make you wonder...

Well, the reasons their civilization faltered are generally attributed to the coming of the conquistadors. When they came they brought diseases with them the Mayans did not have immunity for. Thus spreading rampant disease through the entire civilization. Not to mention the war that was waged upon the Mayan's for a rather trivial plan to find gold. Yes, the Mayan's did have access to a great deal of riches. Most typically Jade. (Which is the name of my ex girlfriend, and apparently the harbinger of death for the mayan's as the conquistadors saw this show of value, and decided to take it from them).

However, I digress.

The Mayan's were indeed a very advanced civilization. Perfect acoustics in their ball courts. (You could talk into the wall on one side of the court and you can listen and hear everything the other person is saying from the opposite end) Chichen Itza puts on a very dynamic display of light on the equinox and also harbors perfect acoustics in the form of echo from the main chamber of the main temple structure.

They fought the first biological war in perhaps the history of civilization. Those infamous pits you see in movies with sharp sticks in the bottom? They existed. But they were not meant to kill the unlucky soul who fell in the pit. They were meant to scratch him to hell. The pit was filled with rotting animals and other dead things carrying, presumably, diseases. This soul would return to the camp and ideally infect everyone else in the camp.

Pretty nifty stuff eh?

So yes, could they have predicted the end of the world. Why not? However, Runes at Coba specifically - the largest (tallest) temple structure created by the mayans in the yucatan - still states the mayan calendar will simply recycle. Beginning the long count all over again. However, if you read into this, the restart of said system to zero, presumably when the 13th Baktun cycle begins - creation also begins. Since we are already created, one is to assume what was created will be erased to be replaced.

Best case, nothing happens.
Worst case, our entire civilization is rendered extinct. Never to be heard of again. And our cities will stand just as the Mayan temples as a testament to our ended reign.

Yeah, i aactually do sometimes think that if everything we ever created got erased, what a bummer it would be, mostly because, altho there is lots of bad in the world, there are some amazing things that we have created. Music, films, storys, monuments.... tons of stuff.

There is some talk about planets aligning during this time period causing a gravitational pull that could be catastrophic on plate tectonics and your HVX habit. Polar shifting etc...

If you're a new listener to Coast to Coast radio, you can rest easy, it is always full of crazy stuff, that's their angle. It'll make you crazy until you realize it's mainly hot air. Then you can enjoy it and get just a little nervous.

Of course I love it --- lots of good stories to drive at night too!

since i believe in science a lot i would go with newton saying the world will come to an end in 2060, but then again he did believe in alchemy....

2012!?! Nah! The world's gonna end in 2000 man! Haven't you heard!?! Y2K baby! They predicted the end of the world!

Oh wait, it's passed.

Well at 3:00 on March 3rd, 2003 the worlds gonna end baby! Just look at the numbers! It's half of the number of the devil!

Oh wait, that passed.

Well on June 6th, 2006 the worlds gonna end! The numbers of the devil 06/06/06!!! Gah!

Oh wait, that was the release date of The Omen (the remake), and it passed.

December 12th 2012 baby! Double the number of the... oh nevermind...

What a bunch of bull....

Then again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecTE6lXI-m0

I think in 2013 we're all going to place the 'end of the world' on another date. I'm sure in the past everyone's made hundreds of predictions as to when the world is going to end, and have been wrong every time.

The moment some one says they know for sure they know when the earth is going to perish (and gives you an exact date) thats when you should:

(a) Nod your head politely
(b) when he's not looking, extend your hand close to the side of your head, pull out your pointy finger
(c) make circular motions then point towards the other guy.

ah yes, but then this guy Einstein came alng and proved Newton wrong, so who's up next.

I love the way these shams take one true fact and extrapolate it into something perverted. Next thing you know, Mars will be as big as the Moon again, and we'll be able to see the acne on the face on Mars.

For some people, the world will end on February 18, 2009; when they find their old analog TVs don't work!!!!

Ha ha, you might be more right than you think..

They actually did a cool little short story about this on Studio 360 today. You can listen on their site:

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAN don't EVEN play around about that.

The Hadron Collider is seriously a scary thing. If the world ends I'm pretty sure it'll be because of that thing. Every time someone mentions the Collider I feel like I should just start a riot cause we're all dead already.

I've actually been looking forward to the LHC for the last two years, yes we should finally find that elusive "God Particle" *heheheee* {geekish laugh}, :D

As for the world ending, if we don't find it {Higgs Boson}, the world might was well end because then it will mean matter doesn't exist {at least the why we currently understand it} and only an illusion of some sort..
