DIY slider with HVX

Here are a couple shots with my diy slider I built. I used Slava's plans and modified them a bit, by attaching a quick release for quick on and off use. The actual slider has a qr plate on the bottom also so it comes on and off the tripod as easy as a camera does. The total cost was about $250. So about half the cost of an indi slider, and as far as I'm concerned it works perfect. I'll be putting it to the test tomorrow night with a full redrock setup for a music video.

footage, still need some practice to get smoother moves

ooohhhhh - now that is GROOOOVY. REally nice smooth shots, and inspiring!!

where were these plans you started from ??

I'm inspired!!

well, I basically just got the part list from this thread. I bought 3 things in total.

1. The sled

2. 32inches of track http://www.automation4less.com/store/proddetail.asp?prod=SGR35-xxxx

3. Standard qr plate from bogen. You could get whatever plate you want.

4. I went to a machine shop and had them cut and drill an aluminum platform which they basically gave me for free.

If you're going to go the route I did, you gotta make sure your tripod is going to be strong enough to take the extra weight. The track and sled are surprisingly somewhat heavy.

very nice engineering - and please forgive the naive question, but how is this used? a 32 inch slide one way or the other doesn't seem like a lot. Is this only used for closeups?

"footage, still need some practice to get smoother moves"

The movement I saw of the Indi were not all that smooth too, it seem not easy to achieve smooth moves with a little track. Is your 503 strong enough when you reach the end of the track with the camera weigh. It's probably better if you have a stable surface.

Wouldn't it be more useful if you could mount a tripod head on the carriage? So you can pan and tilt during the slide.
32" seems a bit short for me. I want to build one with either 39" or 48".
Can't see your video anymore, your link is dead, but the slider looks cool.
