Check out The Assistant Editor at http://www.theassistanteditor.com/. I found it via Flowseeker. From what I understand you can use this to assemble a rough cut of your documentary automatically. What you do is that you tag all your footage and audio as either a-roll or b-roll and by it's subject matter, characters in it, etc. Then you tell The Assistant Editor to assemble the footage into a doc that focuses on a certain theme. The program puts together the cut based off of the tags you give it.

There's a video on the site of how to create a rough cut of a doc with it here: http://www.theassistanteditor.com/howitworks.html and the results of that tutorial are here: http://www.theassistanteditor.com/results.html

Wow, what will they think of next? I'll have to give this a try on my next porno... then maybe the ending will be a surprize!

...the machines are coming...soon they won't need us for anything....

Or, you can go to Staples and use the "easy button."

:)

Alot of the program depends on how you log clips and add comments I believe.

Traditional assembly probably is longer, but as or more effective.

This requires that you make METICULOUS notes and log in several fields. All this time that you take logging and tagging can be used to actually edit your footage.

Phil touts it as a "starting point," an application for those who don't know where to start and need inspiration. So I guess it has a place. And you will know your footage very well when you log all the notes thoroughly.

Never catch me using it.
