Cheap alternative to 7506 cans?

Hey There,

I've had 2 sets of Nice Sony headphones broken in the last year by shooters I hire to work with my gear and by renters. I'm wondering if there are any similar headphones in the $50 range that sound decent and still fold up the way the 7506s do. This way, when a kit goes out with someone other than me, I can send the cheaper cans out.

Nope.

The 7506s are cheap. I know of no other full ear coverage headphones for less that even begin to approach the results of the 7506s.

If people you hire and renters break stuff, they would be paying to buy you a new set, correct? I can't see why you would be paying anything at all. You can always buy some cheap ones, but they won't be full ear and they won't be half as accurate at that $50.00 price.

Good luck,

Dan

Well, the renters pay when things break. with the employees it depends on the situation. For example, I just had a sound guy lose a lav on a shoot, he paid, but this last set of headphones apparently broke in transit to a shoot I wasn't on. I can't prove its the guys fault, so he doesn't pay.

Yamaha RH5Ma, $40 - 50.00, they don't fold up but sound great, & they're not too far off from my Grados. I use these as a std. for studio & field.

I've heard really good things about the Audio-Technica ATH series.
ATH-M20, ATH-M30 & ATH-M40f.

They run $32.85, $49.70 & $69.75 respectively at www.parts-express.com
Might be worth checking out (I know they're great in the studio). They don't fold, but at the price, you can't go wrong!

Before I got my 7506's, I hat the ATH-M30. They aren't bad, certainly not for the price. You could give those a try.

I use:

AKG K 271 for tracking.
Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs for checking mixes.
Sony 7506 for live sound mixing and production sound.

The Sennheiser HD280 Pro headphones fold up nice and are less than $100. I think they're more comfortable and seal out the environment better than the Sony 7506's. They just make you look like a dork from the 70's....where's my roller skates?
