RedRock Shoulder Mount or Zacuto's News Man

Keep in mind that the Double Battery mount must be paired with a Zacuto RED plate... I think that was already on your list.

They both are using 3rd party battery mounts...

How heavy is your monitor? Do you plan on using it mounted behind your camera at all?

Joseph as best I understand the double mount require a battery plate. So basically any battery plate would work assuming the clearances are there. At least thats how I understood it - double battery mount mounts to normal battery mount which mounts to red plate etc... Dont see why you couldnt put the double batery mount on the micropod as long as it has a battery mount and all the sides have whatever clearance (if any) the double battery mount requires. I could be way wrong though.

Wow... sry guys I didn't read the post right.

I think that switronix double mount should work on any double mount plate. But if you have IDX stackable v-mount batteries (which is the case for me)... then you have not need for a double mount. Jeff is right!

That is also how I see it.

also I think I should give up on the idea of having a newsman kind of configuration with a DOF adapter because the 6lbs of both batteries wouldn't be enough for all of the front weight... and the rig would end up way to long.... thoughts?

You can do it... you just have to get the q-riser. You see if you use the shoulder mount directly underneath your camera, you can significantly balance it all! This of course results in your necessity for a good set of grips as well as a good articulating arm. The center of balance would be somewhere under your camera in the setup like you have it now!

I've got this setup (really close at least) and I cant imagine having the front weight of the 35mm adapter up there. I'm sure you could balance it and make it work but damn my shoulder gets tired with this setup alone. Also a tad awkward to put on your shoulder but you do get used to it. To me getting the camera over your shoulder is the key for balance. This of course makes an external monitor a necessity... I've been eyeing Ikan's 2.5" monitor though for use where I dont want or need my lh80 out there, but instead just something small for framing purposes only. Would be the extreme run and gun autofocus situations, but they do come up periodically. Only weighs like 4 oz.

Juntzi, chill man, you don't get what I am saying, the problem is that my hands would be not being able to have the operator use the screen, the rig that would fix that would have it's !!center of gravity!! much further forward, then the rear rails using the Zoffset which it the whole Newsman idea that I have been talking about... I want my Carrion for the 1 AC not the operator... the rear rails would have to be long as heck and the rig would be long as heck itself

Jadajada, what I would try if I were you would be the zoffset, you can totally use that config unless you pull focus yourself, then I love how compact your rig is, show us a pic man! everyone, pls

If you are trying to put the shoulder pad behind the camera and not underneath it... you're going to find that extremely hard to balance as Jeff pointed out.

If you put the carrion mounted behind the camera for a 1st AC or something... then perhaps it will balance out better. I'm just confused as to what you want I guess.

If the monitor is all the way in the back it will be hard at best for the ac to pull focus... So I guess this is a big point for Sony where it is much easier to pull it off

My guess is that I will end up with having to share the monitor, which is not a good thing when you spend so much...

Is there a cheap solution? I am asking about how cheap tiny monitors get, and what they need in terms of power.

I'm sure the iKan 8000HD is your best bet.
Inexpensive and uses minimal power in comparison to the Carrion.

If you want proper balance in your situation, you really do need the shoulderpad as close to the camera as possible. This makes the zoffset piece almost unnecessary as it puts the shoulderpad further back. You want the camera sitting on your shoulder!

Just my opinions but it is what works for me

Counterbalance is a big problem for me, but my shoots are relatively quick, so I don't need big batteries. My setup it all Zacuto right now, but I can't seem to come to terms with paying for Zacuto's shoulder mount and counter balance solutions.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this post... getting some good ideas here.

I'm curious if anyone has had any success with a shoulder mounted HVX rig with 35mm adapter and matte box, monitor, and grip mounted focus controls... I can't keep focus in such a scenario, so I tend to drop the 35mm adapter from moving shots and work some post production effects to hide that fact.
