Indie Rock Music Video - THE SHYS

I did this video for a group called The Shys down in San Juan Capistrano. No crew, no script, just me running around with my HVX.

The songs called "She's Already Gone". They just released their second album, and their past credits include touring with The Killers and an appearance on HBO's "Entourage".

It's my first music video in HD, so i'm still figuring out the focus thing -- but i'm totally stoked on my HVX. My camera even gets hit by a bass drum rolling down the stairs and just keeps going (i had to leave it in the video). Incredible.

this is the first music vid that I've watched in a long time that I have really enjoyed. I loved it. I was hooked after the first 10 seconds. Very simple, but it worked very well.

awesome band also, I really liked that song.

Just lovely. Light and carefree. Nice B&W too. All shot in one day? Loved the cathedral stuff.

I enjoyed the video a lot. Loved the look. My only problem was, getting a bit dizzy with so many cuts, fast motions and shake. There were some beautiful things I wish I had more time to watch and enjoy them.

Love the music and a cool video you made.

Peace

This reminds me of 60s and 70s style film making clips like beatles and even wonder years. There was a nostalgic tone to it all that was enjoyable to watch. The music of course was important to keep people watching and that was good.

Thumbs up.

Cool. I appreciate the good feedback. It was all filmed in one day. Had a tough time cutting the all day and night shots together, but what can you do.

I wanted to do a timeless video. Nothing that would allude to when the video was made, even if someone watches it 10 years from now.

I did do a lot of cutting. More than usual. But they wanted an upbeat video that held the audience, so I tried to pace it out -- slower at first, then tighten it up as much as possible at the end.

That looked great. People are killing themselves with the 35mm adapters and the camera "stock" in the right hands is really nice. You retain so much more detail/sharpness also.

I want to see a version of the video where you execute the trash-built-stage treatment. That sounds like the one to do when you get a budget. What label are they on? Or are they indie?

Matt

They were on Warner for a long time getting the run-around on their second album, so they got off it and signed to an indie label in LA.

Yeah, if I could get my hands on a soundstage to build that tower of trash -- it'd be amazing. (Hope nobody rips that idea off me -- just realized that)

I've been wanting to work more with the lens adapters, but for something this run-and-gun, probably would have hindered more than helped. I had a lot more fun without an adapter.

Thanks for the comments.

THIS VIDEO JUST MADE MY DAY.

love the shots: guy riding bike, all the walking shots, and the silhouette by the fountain. pretty much all of them. the only thing i would change is nothing =D

Thanks for all the great feedback. The band likes it, label likes it, I like it. Everyone is happy.

I like it a lot too, I think not using the adapter was a good decision for this video, more freedom. Good work !

I bough a couple Home Depot clip on lights for $20. I think I had three of them up above the band. I knew I'd be getting all sorts of angles, so I just locked them off. Inevitably, there's a couple shots with them in there, but they look (almost) natural.

I've never used an adapter for a tight/documentary type of situation like this. Would it even be possible, with the size and focus and all???

i never noticed that. I always see the same stuff, after watching it so many times. There was some beer flowing believe it or not. The owner of the house was shooting the band members with a bb gun -- for fun.
