Himalaya expedition: How to assure P2 first timer of reliabilty?

Offloading in the field like that seems a little iffy to me. I would go XDcam HD and bring a but load off discs which are smaller the tapes. XDcam is probably almost as tough a P2.

I saw a video were the froze an XDcam disc into solid ice, then boiled, and the disc played fine.

I'd go with a PDW700 and an EX1

But with the EX1 your back top offloading in the field. unless you get the external harddrive which isn't out. or Jiust live with it because you get more minutes of video per card.

I´d love to hear that story. Especially about the gear, e.g. which solar devices you used and how long it takes to recharge. Which ext./OTG HDDs did you use?

Andrew McMillan: I dont really see the advantage of XDCAM HD, since the HPX3000 and the HVX200 have a better picture quality. And as you noticed, I still have to offload. Question is: to which HDDs?

Check out the OTG drives at OWC, http://eshop.macsales.com/search/otg

I used them and they work great. Nice light package. You could use them directly from the camera with a battery pack for the drive or through a laptop as they are bus powered. I'm going to use them again for a remote trip to the Artic circle later in June. I too will need additional batteries and/or charging source. The Anton Bauers look worth while. I'll keep you posted with my research and please update here if you find anything else yourself.

The toughbooks are true panasonic. They are tough as nails and bulletproof.

If you can spring the money for one I would grab one of those instead.

I love how Panasonic offers XP downgrade option on all their Toughbooks. Wrong word in my mind.

Every computer manufacturer in the world is doing this. If they aren't then they probably shouldn't be trusted with your money.

I bought a Dell laptop that was preloaded with Vista and I wiped that crap off as soon as I didn't need the computer on a daily basis. I swear the computer runs 25% faster at the very least.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I see in the opening post that this himalayan expedition is going to acquire on an HPX3000 and an HVX200.

I assume then, that you are comfortable inter cutting 3000 footage with 200?

This is a question that I'm vitally interested in since I face the same decision.

Can I make footage from a 200 work with footage from a 3000 for a program destined for an HD cable channel that requires masters in 1080i?

(No matter what their spec sheets specify)
