I think that there should be a thread for this. I have shot weddings and recitals... hate them. But it pays the bills.

Also, when I first joined this site, I had my fresh DVX100B in my hand and wanted to use it with a recital that I had coming up (but I was scared to death!). Thankfully, using the search engine, I found several topics of shooting "events" that put my mind to ease. (I had used Digital 8 up to that point and I feared screwing up a job because I switched cameras).

Anyway, the great thing about this site is the information and camaraderie. There are plenty of threads that I don't visit. I don't see the problem of adding a thread that is actually pertinent to Digital Video and making a living with the camera.

Hi,

I voted 'no.' There are plenty of forums dedicated to already. The lack of interest in voting speaks to it here.

It shows it at the top of the poll:
This poll will close on 05-25-2008 at 06:25 AM"

i ask because last week he said

Man, it took me a long time to find this thread. Doesn't seem to be much interest based on the poll numbers either way.

Vote it up over the next week, and if there are enough people to say yes, that lead me to believe that we'll have a decent (but small is fine) little wedding section, then I"ll do it...

i figured maybe he meant he was going to end it this week.

Also, I think Jason's point was that it's not just a matter of the 'yays' having it - but showing that there is enough interest overall.
35 users (which is how many have voted yay so far) out of over 36,000 doesn't really show a whole lot of interest.

he also said this:

We'll let this poll run for a couple of weeks or so, and whatever the consensus, is what we'll do. Deal?

Later,
Jason

so, now "consensus" has been changed to "big enough consensus". really, why are people who won't ever use this voting no? just don't go to the thread. and is it really surprising not a lot of people have voted? it's buried in a forum that has nothing to do with weddings specifically. jason even said he had trouble finding it.

don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to pick a fight. if jason says no, that's cool with me. it's just that dvxuser is really the best forums (imho) for info. i check out some other boards from time to time, but always end back here. then i have to do a google search on the site for different wedding info, and it's hit or miss.

shooting weddings isn't my day job, but i have to do it. that's the only way i could rationalize the thousands of dollars on gear i buy to make films. so if the consensus is yes, it would just be great to have all pertinent info in one place.

just my 2 cents. again, not trying to ruffle any feathers.

dvinfo.net has a wedding/event section that has a very strong following.
It has something like 2500 topics and 27,000 posts.

I think a section on dvxuser would be more popular than you think. Alot of people who shoot event/weddings for a living probably don't come to dvxuser because it has no forum for them.

I just bought a Dvx, and plan to start doing weddings more seriously and would love to have a forume for it.

Let me clarify... Or, at least here is my current thinking :)

I'm not really interested in the yes to no ratio. Just interested in whether or not there is enough interest to warrant a new sub-forum for it on this site.

I mean, I could go and create a new section every time someone requests it, but the site would get awfully muddy real quick.

So, if there is enough interest in a wedding section, then I have no problem creating one. To those who don't want one or don't care one way or another, you just don't have to visit that section. I probably won't be hanging out there that much myself :)

But, this topic has come up more than once and it usually dies down without anything really decided on. So... I figured it was about time to see how much interest there really is. If there doesn't end up being that much interest, then maybe sometime in the future.

I was going to decide in a week, but then noticed the close date on the poll, so I figured I'd let it run until then before deciding one way or another.

Note: This section would not just be for weddings, but for event type filming in general. Sporting events, graduations, dance recitals, plays... whatever. Though, I'm sure weddings would be the most commonly talked about topic.

Jason

Is this a filmmakers community or a weddingographers community
It's a community that often times tends to spend too much time talking about equipment, rather than how to put it to use to get the job (whatever it may be) done. Anything that could lend to more talk about actually using the camera, can't be entirely bad and should be considered. It as after all a "user" community... We are geared primarily toward filmmaking as is evident. But, for folks who can actually use their equipment to pay the bills, and be able to pursue their filmmaking aspirations, I say that's great, and can be much more freeing as opposed to a typical, completely unrelated to the field 9 to 5 desk job. And, it's an opportunity to use your equipment, learn the ins and outs, gain experience on technical aspects that apply to filmmaking as well.

Getting out and turning your camera on can be half the battle. You should know, John :)

Anyways. Just vote away :)

If there is no interest in a yes/no ratio then why put a "no" choice? Why frame the question that way?

I think there would be a different sampling of voter response if the poll was at the top of the dvxusers page, rather than in 1 forum of like 30 different forums. Especially if the criteria is based on volume of response. Just seems like a more fair way to frame a question.

By the way, when I voted "Yes", I had 60 other videographers in my little office with me who were all very enthusiastic about an event subforum. Unfortunately we only have 1 keyboard to share so we could only answer Yes once.

Way too many tripods and pro mist filters in here...

I didn't make the poll. :) Well, sure the no's are important too, but when it's a close margin like this, I'm more interested in overall interest.

great point. and ironically, i think it defends why we should have a wedding forum. let me explain.

we all know where the title of "wedding videographer" is on the food chain. dead bottom. not just among wedding vendors, but also among anyone that has anything to do with a media related job of any kind. why? for one simple reason. 99% of wedding video work is complete and total sh*t. and that is putting it kindly. so when you go to sites focusing specifically on wedding work, you are most likely going to get advice from someone who puts out crap work. not always, but most of the time. you can pick up some good "how to do wedding video as a business" advice, but how to actually film something you can be proud of? not so much.

dvxuser on the other hand, completely different story. and i think that is because most of the users here are either filmmakers by trade, or busting their butts to get there. check out the hvx or dvx grabs forums. tons of beautiful work. now do a google search and try to find the same amount of good wedding work. there are a few people doing some really beautiful things, and seem to have the filmmaker's mentality. for the most part though you'll find what looks like uncle joe got the combover looking extra fancy, put on his best leisure suit, grabbed his 1982 vhs camcorder and made a few bucks with some shaky camera work.

i'd love to have the section here because i want to see what other people are doing. people who want to be filmmakers and have that kind of mentality, but for the time being have to do the wedding thing to be in the game. when i get requests to shoot a wedding, i (nicely) tell the clients that they should use me for my vision, not someone who owns a camera and can go around interviewing drunk guests. and everyone who has hired me had done so because what i've done has been completely different from the people who don't mind saying yes to anything just to get a gig.

sorry for going so long. i just think dvxuser is the best place for people like me, at the level i'm at, looking to combine filmmaking aspirations with a willingness to shoot something like a wedding, just to keep the dream alive.

just my 2000 cents.

Then why not offer threads in:

reality shows shooters
bar mitzvahs
trade show and conventions
visual presentators for corporations
special events

I said in another section, my heart says NO, my mind says YES but only for a traffic addition

-

I think anything not in the filmmaking/music video/docu niche detracts from the site as a whole.

If it's only a user community, then why the threads on directing ? screenplay writing ? film discussion ? cinematography ? special effects and stunts ? #D software ? film festivals ?

=

Okay. I've said my peace. We'll let the natives decide.

Exactly. People have to make a living somehow, and they can either do it by shooting (which means weddings and events) or by flipping burgers. Why not have a place here where they can refine their skills and their business to the point where they can pursue their filmmaking as well?
