I have a similar question. Could I use a 5400 rpm USB2.0 drive for editing of HVX 720p24? Or would it be good to pay more and go for the firewire 800 instead?
There are affordable external Firewire Drives out there for editing; 400 will work, 800 is better. Don't spend money on a USB 2.0 drive. Edit with Firewire.
"My Book" has a seperate SATA hard drive storage system with USB, Fire Wire 400 and eSATA connections. A 500gig "My Book" cost about $160- $170. Now, here is the killer -- If you have laptop computer with a express port ( you should if you have the EX- 1,) there is an express card adaptor with eSATA to connect it to the "My book" unit; It has a SATA II or 300MB theoretical speed. If you have just a desk top compuer with a eSATA connection, this works fine, too. This also makes video files accessable to both laptop and desktop. Finally, by using the Fire Wire 400, you can connect it to your iMac computer and access files from the hard drive portable unit as well. And if you love USB for editing, It's there, too. I think this is a great editing storage solution in one package -- Carl Marxx.:dankk2:
USB editing is fine, but we are dealing with Sony files here. But did you know the SATA 300 transfer rate is 3+ times faster than the USB or the Fire Wire S400.:violin:
