Panasonic HDC-SD9: 1080/24p AVCHD camcorder

Bummer......................... camcorderinfo.com kicked this pup to the curb hard!

asskicked review

Then again, camcorderinfo loved the HV20 and I think it really sucks: handling and codec are terrible. LOL!

SD9 and 24p Import - Have You Done It?

SD9 and 24p Import - Have You Done It?

Despite fast panning other shooting caveats this camera's got a great insert shot value for our HVX200 P2 shoots. Problem is, we shoot 24p and Final Cut won't import AVCHD at that frame rate. We can bring it in but FCS changes the speed of the shot- it must think it's 30fps and we can't make it think otherwise. Panny has an AVCHD-P2 converter utility but it's Windows-only.

We've had suggestions about going through various format conversions to end up in Final Cut, compression upon compression, but the 24p issue is a sticking point. Now we're even wondering about camera HDMI output to a capture card, but we'd really like those original 24 frames the SD9 captured to import properly, all in a row!

Anybody using this camera at 24p and importing the clips, into anything?

I tried to use the analog component output of the camera, capturing at 29.97, then try to delete the pulldown but I could not figure out the pattern to eliminate them.

Any luck with this?

Are you taking your MTS files and running them through the panasonic Main Concept converter to MXF files?

I'm doing this straight off the card with 24p footage and it's coming up as 29.97 footage with a pulldown.......kind of what I expected but someone here in another thread said he's getting straight 23.98 clips off of his.

So does the HV20. It's about 80 ISO. Have you tried the two side by side? I'd expect the SD9 should do better than the HV20, just based on pixel count alone.

very interested in this little bugger, but as you advised Barry.. I'll wait till after NAB. hopefully some useful announcements.

I'd like to see more footie too..

We're returning this cam after two days of testing.

Greens were yellow and blue no matter what type of WB, etc. we tried. Even CC in post didn't cure it.

Nice cam, poor low light as expected, but it just doesn't fit our needs as a b roll

Found solution with Toast Titanium

Found solution with Toast Titanium

I've been toying with this camera and its mysteriously frustrating format for a couple of weeks now.

Voltaic HD has limitations in importing in that it can't convert MTS files larger than 2GB. If it goes beyond that you'll just get black video but still have audio. Another thing is that the video plays slightly longer than realtime, so if you're syncing with other video cameras it's not the best program to use unless they fix it. Also, it doesn't convert to anything other than Apple Intermediate Codec.

I toyed with the craptacular bundled software. The HD Writer really just media manages the MTS files and gives you SD MPEG2 files if you want, so the whole HD thing is moot. Also the Pinnacle Studio 11 trialware didn't give any HD options other than WMV. Not ideal.

Then I found the savior in the most unexpected of places. Toast Titanium 9 and its video file conversion mode. After installing the AVC plugin, I was able to drag and drop MTS files and convert them into ANY quicktime file. HDV, DVCPro, ProRes... ANYTHING

When I laid it down onto a timeline with my DVX's footage.... perfect sync. Finally this camera is useful as a B camera to the DVX. Video quality is what you'd expect from a consumer camera but it balances out with the HD resolution.

Toast 9 is not the cheapest of solutions, but hey, you get a full featured disc burning utility (with blu-ray support now) along with the ability to do whatever you want with AVCHD camera footage.

Boo yah!

nice mike, have you heard about the free program Pany give away, AVC to DVCPROHD its not as versitial buts its free, not sure if its mac tho

According to the System Requirments, it is PC only.

Toast 9 is much, MUCH QUICKER than VoltAIC. VoltAIC says it takes about 12x realtime to convert your clips, and I'd estimate that to be right. Toast 9 on the other hand takes roughly 2.5x realtime to convert on my 2.16Ghz iMac. Also it removes pulldown on the fly and gives me a 24P AIC file.

Hi everyone, I am a new to video so please excuse me if this is a dumb question. I have a sd9 and have been faced with all of the issues of importing the video with my MAC. After reading Mikeshu's post I already have toast 9 Titanium and that luckily solved the importing video issue. But some one told me that converting the video in toast 9 will loose the 5.1 audio. Is this true?

Yes, it does appear that you lose 5.1 audio, but I really don't expect this cameras 5.1 to hold up against a proper 5.1 mix.

Thanks BBF for confirming that for me. After considering my use of this camera loosing the 5.1 audio isn't that big of an issue for now. So far it is proving to be a great little camera.

Actually I didn't hear about that program until you mentioned it :-P. Thanks a bunch!

I use a mac but I run bootcamp so I tried the workflow when booted in Windows. When compared to Toast's conversion to DVCProHD, the quality is pretty much the same. For the sake of avoiding round tripping between PC and Mac, I'll stick with the Toast workflow.
