Support of EX1-LEX+Heavyweight EF lenses

Hi guys.

Experiences from my recent trip into the rainforest...

EX1 with Letus Extreme + Canon's EF180mm on the Manfrotto 503 head a problem.
Due to the length and weight of the entire setup, the Manfrotto 503 wasn't the best for these type of work. The 503 head was rated at 8kg max (approx. 17lbs). I didnt have weight the entire setup but I could tell the load was a little bit overboard for it. Panning was slightly jerky due to the awkwardness and load distribution of the setup. The EX1 on its own was fine for the 503 but not with the LEX setup and the 180mm. Now, I'm looking into the Libec LS60M (2C). Does anyone have any experiences with this tripod/head combo? I need a tripod with a midlevel spreader (for unlevelled ground work) and it has to be relatively light. Budget around the same level.

I'm moving up to an EX3 and I'm facing the problem of getting a new head because the 503 is just not up to par for weight. I'm probably going to get the Miller solo DS20 as I've found it can easily handle camera+adaptor+heavy lens combinations.

How do you know?
Any researched links? So far as I know, Phillip has used it with a few CZ lenses and Nikkor lenses but those lenses are short and pretty lightweight compared to the likes of the 70-200 IS and 180mm..

My DS20 struggles with the EX1+LEX+Long Lens... Its usable but I imagine that Phil would agree that his Vinten Vision is better with the heavy combo of LEX and long lens... Phil??

You can get such nice footage out of the EX1 at the long end of it's zoom range with the iris wide-open (suprisingly shallow DOF) I wonder, can someone explain to me the sort of difference longer 35mm lenses actually make?

Actually, I would only use the LEX when there is a certain kind of look I'm looking for at certain focal length.. most times its usually just the built-in Fujinon. See my Rainforest insects.. something the Fujinon and most other video lenses can't seem to replicate. The other is the super creamy bokeh of a 1.2/1.4 lens.

I have a 501 head for my EX1 which works fine.
Albeit, I also own a Libec and I hate it! Do not buy Libec, it's plastic crap.

Look at Sachtler stuff, or take a look into Gitzos kitchen. Nice stuff to be found there.
I also heard that Tiffen makes nice tripods (Tom Guilmette has one) but these are hard to be found in Europe so no experience with it.
