Field Monitor with HVX 200

Hi,
Has anyone used a computer monitor like the 24inch Dell 2408WFP for monitoring on a shoot. Wonder if the component or s-video inputs work fine?
Dan

The Dell 2405 is a lousy video monitor. The component inputs are horribly noisy and only vaguely useful as a focus monitor. Your footage will look quite disappointing on a 2405 from the component inputs. I'm assuming the 2408 is in the same class.

I'll toss in a second "dont do it". I've got the 2405 as well and it just blows as a production monitor. I've used it occasionally as a client monitor to keep a group of clients away from the camera and it only works if they actually believe that the video wont look that crappy. I've recently repurposed mine as a plain jane computer monitor. It does a fantastic job at that. Sure is big though...

EDIT: Just realized I have the 24" Gateway, not the Dell. It sucks too, so dont bother with it either. I almost went for the 2405 though...

"Component, S-Video and Composite inputs one more time have demonstrated that they are nothing but pure garbage. Whatever the movie (HD or DVD), whatever the player – the picture is distorted, overscanned, cropped. Colors undersaturated."

I agree. We did that once. Not again.

We just use the one made for this kind of stuff, the Panasonic BTLH-1700W.

the dell isnt designed to be a reference monitor. not even good enough for focus in my experience...

its a great computer monitor though.

Looking at panasonic specs. They don't seem to have the HVX200 in their list of camera's that are compatible with the BTLH80W. I presume its a question of powering it. The alternative is to run it on a battery. I guess the component out on the HVX would be appropriate. Have some of you used it with this camera?
Thanks guys,
Daniel

That what I'm using it with right now and is fantastic. Use the camera's HD component out and you are set. I had a d4 to component BNC cable made up and it is solid. No silly adapters or flakey cable to mess with. Yeah you do have to have some sort of power for it. There are plenty of AC-DC adapters with a 12v xlr that work for about $100. I've recentlly purchased a goldmount battery setup for Batteries 4 Broadcast and am loving it. Alot cheaper than AB but it seems to be great quality and the batteries are doing fine in their first few weeks. Time will tell though. 6 hours on a 90wh battery though. Not too bad at all.
