I saw a piece from fresh DV from the NAB recap, that the 8gb card was coming back. Anyone else see that and if so anyone know the time frame?

Panasonic has been talking about doing that. I checked with our rep and he said at this time it's a rumor but if they did decide to bring them back it will be about the same time the 64GB cards come out.

Personally I kinda like the workflow with 8gig cards. For most of our shoots, 8 gigs is enough to get a few scenes put to bed. In the edit bay it's easier to look into folders with fewer clips.

I would suggest a good toolset would include two 32 or 64 gig, two 16gig and about four 8gig cards.
Of course, that depends on what you do daily.

I watched the interveiw with Jan. I know why my rep said that it was a rumor now. She mentioned that they are working out the memory issue so that may still be up in the air. I would be comfortable saying that they are coming though and unlike the old ones, they will be the new "R Series" cards too which is better for all of us.

Andrew, what's better about the R series. All I know is that its a different memory setup inside (not 4 SD chips in a raid right?). How does that translate to "better" for the end user? Faster transfers? Just curious. All I've got is 3 of the old 8 gb cards right now.

The memory is still in raid configuration but it's the bare chips physically soldered to the circuit board rather than SD cards placed in sockets. Not that it has been an issue but the only benifits that I can see with that is a more rugged product and hopfully in the future less cost.

Oh ok, didnt realize they were actually using SD cards in sockets on the first version. While they seem to be rugged and unstoppable, I could see where soldering them in as bare chips would be an advantage in durability and hopefully in costs savings too. Thanks for the info Andrew!

8gb P2 Cards are the best but, like TedRR pointed out, it seems better to have a few different sizes in the Arsenal. Ideally you'd have 4 8gb p2 Cards and two 16gb Cards.

Unfortunately that's a very nice wad of cash!

Just as well, 8gb Cards will fit on one dual layer DVD which is very very nice for archival.

Archiving is why we have stayed with 8gb. DL DVD quick and easy. Would be nice to see them come out by summer

Just picked up 2x 16 giggers for my kit, i've now got 3x 8's and 2x 16s... for me it works perfectly. Enough 8's to keep swapping and downloading on set and Enough 16s to record for a long time before needing to offload.

Yea i've put cards in with other cards by mistake before using p2cms..and everything was fine, just had a bigger card folder.

Never thought about the spanned clip thing! thats awesome!

The 8GB cards are coming back, and I think at the time of the interview I thought it was sooner than later. But I have learned that the time frame in in the November time frame.

Best,

Jan
