Why is 50i better quality than 25p?

I know I might be wrong but I thought that 50i is just 25 frames doubled...so I wonder why its better quality and more video like. I bought the DVX102b which doesnt seem to have 30p.

50i more video like yes, better quality no. progressive is a full frame, interlace is a half frame therefore half the quality as a full frame.. Where did you read that? You got a PAL camera. NTSC has 60i, 30p and PAL 50i,25p. what County are you in?

I'm in England but I went to singapore on the way home from Australia and bought the DVX102...So I was right in saying that the first frame is repeated and so on for 50i so really 50i is only good for slowmo? thanks :)

No, the first frame isn't repeated. 50i isn't even frames; it's half-frames, or fields. Each field represents a new reading of the CCDs, a separate moment in time. It happens 50 times per second, so each 50i field is new picture. Anything moving will be in a slightly different place in every field.

Which is why you can'd just splice them together to make a frame, and why you see the comb interlace artifact on anything moving when you do.

50i = 50 half-frames per second. 25P = 25 full frames per second.

50i = 50 motion samples per second, at half frame size.
25p = 25 motion samples per second, at full frame size.

50i = "the video look"
25p = "the film look"
