"A Day Trip" Short Film | Stock Lens

Great job guys. Hope to see more from you. Couple of suggestions. How about some cable relief for your monitor cables. You don't want to deal with having to replace output jacks. And make your screen credit: Michael Carberry and Daniel Carberry. Your not married fer chrissakes. Very impressive work overall.

Nice flick -
I can pretty much agree with everything that's been said, so I won't rehash all that ...
one strange thing though... did you do any colour correction?
Because looking at the still you have on your initial post, then seeing the film, there seems to be quite a large difference. The film seems much more desaturated.
Personally I love the way those stills look.
One thing I've discovered recently, whilst exploring colour correction, is that, sometimes, it's just fine as it is.. Which can be a hard thing to admit to yourself for some strange reason. I was grading my video, and my first run through was awful. I was grading because I thought I should, not because it needed it.
I think the richness in those stills you have is really gorgeous.

Good work guys

grabs

We did a little bit of color correction on our film. The grabs from this thread were taken right from the movie in fcp. When you watch our movie your watching a compressed file, quicktime h.264 that is why the grabs look cleaner, nicer and more attractive than the film online.

I believe a bit of color correction is usually definitely needed, no matter what, for anything.
Thanks for watching our short.

hasn't been commented on in about a week but that's ok. First off I'd like to say great job. I mean, I live in Cincinnati, and a junior in my major, and most are only starting to make short films, and I've never even shot any films on an HVX (bmx yes, film no)and here you are in high school getting the opportunity and learning about lighting and stuff!! you should feel very very lucky.
now onto my critiques: The lighting looked very good, very minimal but it made a difference for the better. The audio was very well done too, as well as crane/jib shots. Now, the handheld stuff sometimes takes away from the feeling of the film in some moments, such as inside the gas station. Usually handheld helps give it the "raw" feel like you're really there in the middle of it, and especially POV shots are good for it, which you did effectively. But other times it might've been better to just use a tripod so that you focused more on the story since there wasn't a whole lot going on such as in the gas station but I kept finding myself asking if we were watching from a person's vantage point or not. Next, when there was a quick cut when she was driving SUV to a POV of her angle, but it was shot on the passenger side of the car so it kind of stuck out to me. And also when she did the motivated eyeline shift to the mirror, it might've been better to some how film her POV of looking at the white car through the mirror rather than straight out the back window(but I know how hard that can be). And lastly, there was a cut of her standing outside the gas station, to her standing outside her SUV (right before she leaves), and you didn't change the angle that you filmed her at, so it looked like a weird "morph" rather than a cut. You always want to change the angle of a cut atleast 30 degrees, which I mean I'm sure you know, but it might've just been the best shot to use. But overall super impressive, and who knows...maybe we'll run into eachother someday too! keep up the good work. ..and oh yeah, send the girl down to UC if you'd like too ha.

You obviously are not a twin. Marriage is close but twins are another story. Daniel and myself are so close especially because we work together, live together and mostly are each other.

Cable relief for a monitor is so they can't rip out?

Thanks So Much. That was really helpful. There's a reason related to every critique and the main one would be money. This was a 1 thousand dollar movie we funded out of our own pocket. Our parents DID NOT HELP! Thanks Again. Really and thank you for pointing out all of the stuff that DID need improvements! Really Really appreciate it. Any other questions or anything feel free to call us anytime neighbor. 4408122429.

A little off topic, but how do you as a high schooler raise the money to shoot?
We filmed some weddings in the summer. Our parents have not helped us financially. To be honest, they couldn't if they wanted to. It's all passion that has got us this far.

Hey this is John - the Boom Operator from "A Day Trip." Just wanted to say thanks for all the positive comments regarding the audio.

If anyone has any comments/critiques/suggestions/questions, etc. audio-wise from the film....Please post them!! I would be stoked to see them.

Thanks!
