Short Film "The Jettison of Jeremiah Johnston"

This is a back-up plan for a film that is yet to be made. LONG STORY SHORT - the main actor dropped out 10 hours before the plane's departure to NYC. Therefor I became the main actor, and remained extremely uncomfortable with the original story of the film.. It was originally suppose to be a father telling a bedtime story to his son.. an inspirational story of perseverance.
A week before the movie was due we radically changed the entire story.. and came up with this.. a sort of self-portrait of that time.

The sound quality is really atrocious.. perhaps some post-sound would be required. But since we ran out of time and we simply don't want to look at the video for a while... this is what we're showing. Hope you like it

PS: English is my fourth language - so give me a break on the grammar :-)

That was actually quite entertaining and I love the new direction you took it in. That is what art is about.. taking what you have, even if it was not what you expected.. and making something new. Beautiful cinematography as well..

I am sure it will be asked at some point so what gear did you have? As in was that a stedi cam or glide cam? Did you shoot the stuff that happened to him first and then build the "story" around that? What was the musical piece in the film?

I enjoyed that a lot. Wish there was a quicktime link so I could save it. But yeah I'd also like to know what you shot the moving shots with, they were very smooth.

Hey- thanks everyone! Great feeling knowing that people enjoyed it :-)
The gear we used was the hvx200 and a glidecam. We didn't use an adapter.
The settings usually depend on the circumstances of the location and lighting (we're big fans of natural lighting) - The DP (Andy Holmes) usually retouches his work during post. He adds gradients and color corrects the picture that he wants you to see.

I'm posting another example of imagery and visuals - Short film "The Memories of Billy Rainwater"

The music we used was Yann Tiersen (track Goodbye Lenin, from the film Goodbye Lenin)

We were originally planning on having that sequence of cheering in the original story. We never had thought arriving in NYC that we were going to find the hardest sequence in the film. We shot it thinking of the original story. For instance, at the end.. instead of suicide.. it was suppose to be the character floating away... We took extreme opposite stories

Then the other actors (son and dad) were not available for the shoot. I had a deadline - so I wrote a new script. The footage worked as a support for the new story.

Thanks again for watching and for your comments. Please keep sharing your thoughts and opinions.

Cheers!

I really like your style. I like the other shorts you've shown here too. What kind of effects program did you use for the projector effect? Your color correction is admirable as well. Also, howd the glidecam work out for you with the HVX200? Thanks and good job.

That was awesome. How much preproduction work went into getting all the crowd shots from the city?

The crowd was always part of the original movie - but when we got to NY we figured that people were never going to do us a favor and cheer up in front of the camera. The film wasn't going as we were planning... we were no longer following the script.

But suddenly... after a long day of shooting nonsense we found the crowd by luck in Timesquare... they were all there protesting for what I think was 'popular culture' (go figure...) - The cops and everybody around us thought we were media.. so we had no problem walking around in restricted area... We have like two long shots of people turning their heads... seing the camera...and slowly changing their expressions to cheering. it's really incredible to watch.
