How good is Vegas?

Yes - that appears to be a really good price and yes, it will edit in the field with Vegas just fine.

My suggestion would be to partition your hard drive and only run the OS on one partition, everything else you can put on the second. Still will be better if you were using external drives rather than the system drive but that laptop should work just dandy.

Yes, absolutely get an external drive for all your media.

I have run Vegas on a whole lot of computers and it works great on all of them, from my new MacBook (under bootcamp) all the way to an old P3 I installed just for fun.

NewZealand > First off in my personal experience. Laptops will never perform equal to a desktop, even in the same config. Desktops are more robust solutions. ALWAYS. But there are a lot of docu / feature film makers editing on their laptops on the fly. Its possible. Just dont expect the instand response and playback fps that you get on a desktop. Also 512 ram is just the bare minimum. Get a laptop with a large L2 cache and at least 2 gb ram. Prices have come down and you will find them real cheap. Make sure the ram is 800Mhz DDR2 Ram. And the FSB speed of the MB is 800 too. There are lappys with 1066Mhz too. All this plus try to see if you can get a 2 exclusive HDD system.
One for the OS and the other where your video footage is. In deskops we usually use at least 3 drives. One for the OS. 2nd for the raw footage. 3rd for rendering to. This ensures theres erratic HDD reading. Or else your hdd will have to scan here and there all at the same time. Your footage might also stutter. Putting the OS on a seperate Partition is a logical thing to do. But partitions will not help you in any speed increase. Still everything is on the same physical drive which slows down your data thruput. Carrying extra drives in the long run might be frustrating. In the beggining its ok. :). You might eventually want to carry one block. Even if its heavier.

I am probably the worst editor (if I can even call myself that), on this site. Barry Green and a few others talked me into starting out with Vegas a couple of years ago (because of it's user friendliness), and I must say it is above and beyond anything I had expected. After reading the first few chapters of the owners manual I was editing minutes later. I edit on a VERY old laptop, and desktop, and Vegas has NEVER crashed. And believe me these systems are out dated.

I am currently editing a television show I just shot and I think I will stick to Vegas as I grow as an editor. Keep in mind the projects I am editing and have edited are very basic, but if I can learn it anyone can.

I have considered FCP and Avid to keep up with the Jones's, but why fix what isn't broken. A few months ago someone on this site told me as long as it is working for me and if I will never be an editor for hire, and will only edit my projects, why change.

One area I had not tried is Chroma, which I will have to for a couple of segment of my show. How does Vegas respond to this? Is it time to upgrade from 6.0 to 8?

i'm forced to use vegas right now..becuse of its HD support.. im using it but its limiting to me coming from 9 years of premiere experience.. i cant get into it... i'm figuring stuff out but its ... "YOutube for the tutorial". I dont like how the clips move on the timeline, i dont like the interface, the only good thing is that it exports HD nicely.... when this project is done.. ill be happy. :D

The problem that I'm having is that I will be out in the field (New Zealand bush) for a month and will need to at least do a nice rough edit before I head back to Alaska to make sure I have all the shots I needed. I just put on a thead about getting ready to pick up my laptop and found out that it is 64 bit and the sale person said that Vegas Pro won't work with it. (4GB Memory, 320GB Hard Drive, 17")

Not sure what to do now?

Vegas 8 will run on a 64bit machine. Quite a few doing it already. It won't take advantage of the 64bit, only 32 however there is a 64 bit version of Vegas being released later on in the year that will only run on Vista 64.

Based on your specs (not sure the proc) but everything else seems pretty loaded.

Who told you that it wouldn't run Vegas? Laptop sales guys?

Laptop sales guy was the one that gave me the info. He said he look it up and saw that vegas was only a 32 bit running software.

This is the laptop; HP, (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5550 Laptop) 4GB Memory, 320GB Hard Drive WIndows Vista Home Premum 64-Bit Editon, NVIDIA GEFORDE 8600M GS (512 MG DDR2) 1.87 GHZ pre Core, 17.1" Brightview Widescreen Display.

should I go get it?

Chenopup - Just went and picked up the Laptop. Next step is to get the Vegas pro. What do you think about B&H selling the disk for less than $200? Would that be a good way to go or should I get the whole package?

I've been forced to use Final Cut and Premiere at various workplaces but will always use Vegas when I have the option. It works so much faster and cleaner.

Check and see what "package" it is - last I had heard, it was just Vegas 8, no DVD Architech or AC3 encoder. If you don't need those or already have Vegas 7 and DVDA 4.0, then you're pretty much fine. It's a steal of a deal. Not sure what the upgrade path is to DVDA 4.5 once you already have Vegas 8 is. May not hurt to give Sony a call to find out.

Well, if you already have Vegas 7 and DVD Architect, B&H is also offering an upgrade to the full package for $149.99.

When I was in College I used FCP and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. Then when I was done with school and had to buy a computer for myself all I could afford was a windows rig I built. Once I finished the build I joined this forum in 2003, took users advice, bought Vegas and haven't even considered looking back.

Will projects rendered out of vegas 8 be perfectly compatible with dvd arch 4. Because i already have vegas 7 with dvd arch 4. If i just get 8 pro will my projects and renders be perfectly backward compatible with DVDA 4 ?

Absolutely. You'll be fine. Since Vegas & DVDA are two different programs, it's no different than authoring even in another NLE and bringing in the assets to DVDA to build the DVD.
