Brevis35+FX1+70-200 F4.5 (daylight test)

Here you go, guys. I shot this with a 70-200 f4.5. The footage is all very shaky because the fx1+brevis+70-200 is a freaking bazooka. It's extremely hard to pull focus, take care of the shutter, iris, nd filter, etc and hold this heavy artilary. Anyway, I think that the brevis works the best with day light. Too bad the Hd file was too heavy to post. Here is the SD version:

P.S - No color correction. The only thing that was done on post was to rotate the footage.

We have some footage with the Brevis and a 50mm zeis lens from a FX1 we are going to put up in a few days that looks good and we just used 200watt screw in flouros. We also had an M2 hooked up and the Brevis is definitly brighter. I think we only lost a half a stop. Its hard to tell which is softer but they both look great.

I get my Brevis in like 3 weeks! Aching. I have a Z1 and a Nikon 50mm prime. Arrrg I can't wait.

Raf, do you have a pic of that setup? Also, what is the model of the lens? I'm utterly impressed that you got an f4.5 lens to work that well. Something tells me that it must maintain f4.5 right through the zoom range.

i just got insanely naesuous (sp?) watching that. Do you have a tripod? Footage is nice, but i have to skip frame by frame, that was just way to jumpy for me to watch 7 minutes straight of it.

Hah...rawfa, I feel for ya...that had to be a nightmare shoot. I can imagine your frustration as you spotted a subject you liked - then trying to fight to keep it focused, well composed etc. I switched on my internal IS and really liked what I saw. Even a cheap (and innocuous) tripod would do this wonders. Even better, get a couple of actors (or friends) and cheap lavs and shoot a brief scene. It's a such a vibrant location.

I also liked the look of the long lens - what brand is it?

I was getting sick my self while filming it. Before I went out on the streets to start shooting I was like "nah, that's not that heavy"...all I can say is that my forearm still hurts. My advice for anyone who is crazy enough to go out on a PRO run&gun shoot with a rig like this is rent a steadycam or some sort of powerful stabilizer, or else you'll be in for a world of pain.

StMad, the lens was a canon fd.

I'm going to be the bad guy. This isn't a criticism of the movement, the movement is understandable. But the footage, the colours, the softness, was really very bad. I mean I've seen the letus look better. I've seen amzing stuff with the brevis, but this has to be by the worst. Like someone here said, it looks like 8mm.

Tha is exactly why I posted the footage form the FX1 without the Brevis on the same location. The one shot with the brevis doesn't look at all like it was shot with an FX1 :-( .

Raf, try posting some low compression footage from a tripod, using your 50mm FD with the cam set at approx f8, and the 50mm at f2.8 to f4. You will likely need a CP or ND filter on the 50mm to do this if you're outside. If your backfocus is correct, and the 35mm focus is correct, that footage should be very sharp and free of CA.

I aligned the back focus with a big tv so there wouldn't be any mistakes, the lens was always at f4.5, the iris on the fx1 was around f4 (can't really remember the exact value), I was using using the FX1s' ND filters and the sharpness was set at it's maximum. I'm extremely curious about Arams' test. I GOTTA find out what's wrong here.

If you are using the FX1's ND filters, your GG may very well be overexposed. If you are getting into the camera's ND's that is a sure sign that you need to reduce exposure to the GG. Having an ND or CP on the 35mm lens may be required in sunlight.

I'll post up a test procedure for you over at cinevate which should help to eliminate/reduce external variables.

You might absolutely be on to something there. Next weekend I'm gonna look for some ND filters for my canon fd lenses. There's GOTTA be a logical solution for this.

Any advice on the intensity on the ND filters? I found many options (1 stop, 2 stops, 3 stops, etc). I might also get a polarizer.

I'd suggest a CP, and an ND.6 in 72mm size. These will fit on your FX1, and can be used with step up rings on your entire 35mm collection.

In daylight, with a fast lens, you'll likely use one of these filters all the time.

Thanks, Dennis. I actualy realized I have an 18-28mm that has a filter size of 72mm. I'm gonna do some testing with it and see how it goes. I'll be crossing my fingers for this to solve the issue.

BTW, are any of you other Brevis owners using the ND filters directly on the 35mm lens?

I went to 4 different stores and they are all out of ND. I'm buying some on ebay or bhphotovideo. I shot a couple more tests but it still looks weird to me. The razor sharp image that the FX1 usualy produces disapears:

Oh, by the way I forgot to turn the brevis on in one of the shots.
