frame rates & slow motion

I have seen some hvx work on here of people shooting wakeboarding/skateboarding and the slow motion looks very smooth and glassy. I can't seem to pull this off overcranking the camera, and i would like to know what frame rate people are using.. and also are they adding slow motion in post?

thanks,
john.

I did a bunch of tests and found that 720/24pn @60fps with the shutter as high as it will go was the best results for the best slow motion with no motion blur. Also nothing was done in post to slow it down any further.

Settings i used for a litter PSA

Using a 350 degree shutter will make motion super smooth but less crisp. If you use something to add frames, you don't want excessive blur, though.
I have used AE's frame blending to take footage from 60 to 120fps, and I've been very happy about it. It's 5x slowmo for 24fps, so I use it sparingly.

thanks. I will have to do some testing to get what im looking for.

If you want a really good and 'complete' explanation of time lapse and how to over and under crank a HVX200, get your self the first volume of Barry Green's 'BOOTCAMP' and give it your full attention again and again until you've got it down. After that it is a breeze!

(After all, with all of his contributions to this website, we should give him a plug now and then...)

What NLE are you using? Premiere cs3 has a function on it called "time warp" that interpolates frames. It doesn't work all the time, but when it does it looks nice.

yes i am using cs3, but yet to try out the time warp tool, thanks for the heads up.

FWIW, I didn't care for the IQ when using CS3 time warp. Seemed to really lower the res which is not a good thing when dealing with HVX files.

YMMV
