Friends:

I’m very proud to announce a new component of dvxuser! Please welcome:

It’s a great honor to spearhead this new project and I’m excited about its potential. I’d like to thank the dvxuser membership, Jarred Land, the dvxuser moderators, and especially Jason Ramsey for his input and effort in getting this idea rolling.

What is dvxuser Monthly?

dvxuser Monthly is a print companion to the dvxuser site.

What’s in dvxuser Monthly?

The editorial goal is to provide content primarily focused on you, the membership, and what you’re doing. Articles about dvxuser members, their projects, their successes, and their challenges will make up the bulk of the content. You can also expect technical articles, product reviews, tutorials, and more, however content will focus on the membership.

Why is dvxuser Monthly being published?

dvxuser is a great site. It’s filled with information, contacts, ideas, and news. As a community message board, it’s outstanding. But while its content is broad, it often doesn’t have depth. dvxuser Monthly will explore people and topics of interest to you in an in-depth format that isn’t practical through an online medium.

When will the first issue be published?

As this idea is brand new, there is much to do to prepare the first issue. Subsequent issues should flow much easier and regularly than the first. I’m hoping for June, 2008, but please don’t tar and feather me if issue #1 hits your mailbox in July.

Can I read dvxuser Monthly online?

No. dvxuser Monthly, at least at this point, will be a print-only publication. But you can discuss the publication and its content online. Hopefully dvxuser Monthly will be enough of a success to have its own forum on the site in the near future.

How much will subscriptions to dvxuser Monthly cost?

I’m proud to say that subscriptions are free. Just like the message board itself, the festivals, and the contests, there’s no charge to the membership.

So will dvxuser Monthly be loaded with advertising?

No, it’s important that the print companion to the site maintain the same standards as the website, which has very little intrusive advertising when compared to other sites. However, the cost of producing and distributing this publication will be hefty, so some advertising is necessary.

How many pages will each issue be?

Expect the first few issues to be eight pages.

Who’s producing dvxuser Monthly?

John LaBonney will be responsible for the content, and Jason Ramsey will be handling the advertising end.

So John’s writing it all himself?

Heck no! While you can expect that I will personally produce a good portion of the content of the first few issues just to get things rolling, it’s simply not possible for me to travel the globe covering the happenings of the site and its membership. dvxuser Monthly needs people from everywhere dvxuser members go to produce content for each issue. In effect, dvxuser Monthly will be for you, about you, and in many cases, by you. While not everyone will be interested in writing full-length articles, your input in the form of story ideas, photos, tutorials, reviews, letters, comments, and suggestions are all very welcome. There’s a way for anyone that wants to contribute to do so.

Where do I send my story pitches, questions, and comments?

For the moment, contact editor@dvxusermonthly.com. For advertising inquiries, contact Jason Ramsey at advertising@dvxuser.com

I’d like to write a regular column for dvxuser Monthly.

Pitch it to me. Tell me what your idea is and why you think it would make a good column of interest to the membership.

Will you feature me or my project in an issue?

If you or your project would make a story of interest to the membership, we’d certainly consider it.

I’m a writer/composer/colorist/sound engineer/DP/PA/visual effects guru/producer/whatever looking to hook up with other members and work on projects. Can dvxuser Monthly help me?

Credit goes to Jason Ramsey for the idea of a “resource directory” in each issue, a place for you to advertise your services and needs to the community. Even though you can already do this through the website (and probably in a more timely manner there), dvxuser Monthly is all about promoting the users. A resource directory will help get you more responses to your inquiries, hopefully connecting even more of us together in great projects.

A free publication focused on the dvxuser membership? What a great idea! How do I subscribe?
dvxuser will set up a subscription page on the site. Once it’s up, we need you to subscribe as soon as possible so we can know the approximate quantity of the first issue. Keep your eyes peeled and be the first kid on your block to receive dvxuser in the mail!

Thanks, John.

Folks, go ahead and post up here for now if you'd be interested in something like this... Interested in being a subscriber primarily. Let's get an idea of initial interest, and soon we'll set up a subscription page for you to go and subscribe to the publication and give the address to mail to and all that jazz.

DVXuser, will not sell your personal information. Count on it. I just said it and set it in stone. We don't do that crap here :)

So, post up "I'm interested" or whatever, if you are interested in becoming a subscriber. If you want to become a contributor (either regularly or occasionally) hook up with John or myself in private.

Later,
Jason

I'd pay for postage each month to have it. Remember, a lot of companies have a subscriptions budget. After Variety comes to the door, we have about $.42 left over for other stuff!

Speaking of... whatever happened to my Stuff subscription!?

It is likely going to cost a lot in the beginning in particular to get this thing rolling, until we get high enough circulations to help keep cost per print down and all that jazz.

We want to keep the advertising to a minimum and really only promote folks like you see here. Folks worth promoting and such.

Maybe we'll set up a voluntary donation paypal link as well. Anyone who wants to donate can feel free to help make sure this thing gets off the ground strong. This is a different beast, but as always, we like to share the love and not charge people for it :)

Later,
Jason

Count me in. It would be great to include some tips and how tos from some of the Pros around the forums, (a month with some steadicam tips, a dolly article... ), keep it light, but make it interesting!!

I'm very excited! Keep it up!
