Hvx200 to Hpx170 upgrade - should I buy new UV/Polarizer, or get a step-up ring?

The hpx170 is 72mm, the hvx200 is 82mm. I have a circular poloraizer and a UV filter that are 82mm from B+W, pretty nice, valued around $350.

Should I include those when I sell the HVX200, or just keep them and get a 72mm-82mm step-up ring? Why?

If I go with the step-up ring, I see three on B&H: one $10, one $50, and $107 one from B+W. Is the B+W one worth the extra $100?

I assumed you'd looked up the wrong thing - just double checked it and sure enough I found the B+W step up ring for $106.50!

Honestly, I can't possibly see spending anywhere near that much.
I'm in the same boat as you, and I would just plan on buying $10 'general brand' step up ring....
that's what I'm planning on doing - unless someone can give us a good reason to spend ten times that amount.

Keeping a UV filter on there with a step up ring could get annoying, but
other than convenience I don't see an issue.

That doesn't mean there isn't one.
Just means I don't know about it.
:)

What would be annoying about it? Sorry I've never used a step-up ring so I don't know where or why it would get annoying...

It is a little tough sometimes to separate an extra ring.
Since you're stepping up, you probably won't have problems with vingetting.

This whole issue is why 4x4s are so awesome. :)

yeah but I mostly am just using a permanetly attached UV filter, occassionaly a polarizer - that's it. Since the UV will almost always stay on... is it still ok for a step-up ring? I won't have any issues (like vingetting, quality loss, etc.?) My UV filter will be a permanent additon to the camera, except for the polarizer filter occassions

It may be that the lens hood might not fit if you have an 82mm ring on there. We'll have to try that with a production model before we know for sure.

i own one of those $107 step up rings and i must say it's well worth it. no other piece of gear i have ever purchased has improved my camera's performance as much as this little gem. i would tell you all of it's amazing features but i don't want to spoil the surprise for you. trust me, it is worth every penny.

Wow sounds like quite the step up ring... and it sounds like your being sarcastic. But do you seriously own one of those, and can you compare it to a cheaper one?

ya i was kidding. i have no idea why a step ring would be that expensive.... i have some of the $10 ones in various sizes and they work fine. don't waste your money.

Unless it's solid gold with a built in lubrication reservoir that keeps you from getting filters stuck on it, then $110 is a little much for two sets of threads and some metal.

I like the B and W stuff a lot though. Not sure why so expensive either... but the 25 dollar one I got is so much better than the cheapie. Don't skimp

Has anybody had success with using a step up from 72-82mm on the HPX170? For anyone who has actually tested this, was there any issues with the hood/lens cover fitting etc, or any other drawbacks?
