I'm selling one of my HVX's now to get the HVX200a, and will probably sell the other to get an HPX170 when the time comes.

ha ha,. so you're going to buy another camera and not use it? :)

I will likely get a 170 when they come out. I just sold my HVX this month. Not for that reason, but I will prob get the 170 when it comes.

i really like the additions to the new models and the 170 fits my needs like a glove. i never use tape, i use firestore a lot and i like to travel light. i like the wider lens and def the newer low light advancements.

A sixth poll option?

A sixth poll option?

Here's a sixth poll option:
One who has been considering buying a used original hvx200 before the 200A hit the fan and now is faced with buying it even cheaper because of the whole fuzz or conversely buy the 200A for the full price even knowing the 170 is coming.
There is no such option in the poll as to which way people may go. Think it is a valid option since many of us need to keep the ball rolling and still will be wanting to go for the 170 when available.

i think a lot of people spend too much time chasing kit and not improving their craft.

There are valid reasons to want to upgrade a camera. Not to say that you can't do plenty with what's available now, but extra latitude etc. goes a long way to helping to improve the overall image.

Lighting below a theoretical 320ISO indoors isn't very fun.

Absolutely true!!

However, some of the HPX170 improvements are KEY - especially for live event shooters like myself. 50% improvement in low light? HUGE! Not only for when you CAN control lighting, but especially when natural ambient light is all you've got!

1.6lbs lighter and smaller form factor is huge for all the handheld shooting... and also very nice for use on a steadicam, to get the weight lower (and thus save $$ on a steadicam). The focus assists are GREAT, especially when you need to focus and don't have a better, higher res LCD available (or can't afford one). A lot of convenient features.

These things make the tool much better and more useable, and therefore makes this a near essential upgrade for myself.

And some people actually do both! gasp!

Different paths! More power to those who are at home with doing it! There's nothing bad about it, nor is there anything bad about grabbin' a new tool that makes it a little less troublesome.

The 170 is what I want -- lighter, wider lens, less noise. The perfect camera. I will sell my 2 month-old HVX at some point.

I like new gear as much as the next guy. In fact, my wife was able to locate me at NAB by following my trail of drool. And some innovations can certainly solve problems, like better low-light performance. But so much of the "this or that" chat is mental masturbation to me. Newer gear never solves the problem of an unskilled shooter, and I can't help but think that some of the folks who engage in these debates are looking for a camera to either overcome shortcomings in their skill-set, or give them more credibility.

I still do the lion's share of my paid gigs on a good ole dvx-100a

That being said, I keep an HPX-500 brochure in my bathroom for "private time"

Remind me never to read any brochures at Jim's house. We'll keep the HVX200 through the end of the year to allow a little overlap on the 170s.

I laugh. Basically, yes. I use my main HVX quite often, but haven't needed the second unit at all. Unfortunately I have a few projects coming up later this year that will require two cameras, so I can't just cash out on the 2nd one. I thought about renting, but they'll be drawn out projects, so that'll get expensive fast. I'd rather just sell it off when the project's done than bother with renting.

The decision to get a HVX200a rather than just keeping the HVX I have was made mostly because of the improved low light performance and lower noise-- most of what I'll be working on will be shot indoors and in context where proper lighting probably won't be possible.

and then next year Pannasonic will upgrade the LCD and everyone will want to upgrade again. I am happy with my camera and have no plans right now.

After that last post, I need to contribute something to this conversation....

Well, the added WFM and Vectorscope, plus the focus assists make it a great upgrade. My favorite upgrades, believe it or not, are the "less noise" feature and the 1/2 stop more sensitivity.

im kind of a twice bitten - thrice shy kind of guy. i remember back in the old mac days. the 840av (first pro video capable mac) came out. and i got one. and all my friends said "man, you should wait until the 8100av PPC mac comes out in 6months" well they all got thier newest thing 6 months later and they eventually discovered they were stuck with a buggy machine that would NEVER perform properly - all in the name of having the newest spec box. all the while i was editing happily on my "last years" 840av.

so until i win the lottery, i wont be jumping on new devices based only on spec. i'll wait ta few months until its worked its way into the community and THEN decide whether or not to buy.
